Going into the finals, Wyatt, a freshman, from Dugway, Utah, was in fourth place, but he recorded a personalbest mark of 204-1 in the medal round to claim the championship and earn a spot on the US Junior National Team. After his finishing in the top three at the North Amerjcan Championship he was to represent the United States in the World Junior Championships, but because of his prior commintment to serve an LOS mission in Kentucky, he was not able to attend. "This is a great accomplishment for Brad." SUU Track and Field Coach Eric Houle said. "To win the junior national meet and have the opportunity to go to the World Championships is huge. It's athletes like this, coming up big in meets like this who are putting our program on the map. This sends a clear message to people that we are a school that can produce olympic calibur talent.· Wyatt is the first Southern Utah athlete to earn a spot on the US Junior National track and field squad. Wyatt plans on returning to SUU following his mission. Gibson became the first Thunderbird ever to compete in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento, Calif. Gibson attempted to qualify to represent the United States in the 400-meter hurdles in the upcoming 2000 Olympic Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. The first round of competition in the 400-m hurdles was held July 15. Gibson finished fifth in her heat with only the top four moving on to the semi-finals. The Castle Dale, Utah, Emery High School native was a four-year letterwinner at SUU, becoming the school's- first-ever track and field all-American in 1999 earring the honor with er seventh-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Boise, Idaho, June 2. Gibson currently holds six individual SUU records and two other team relay records, and has won numerous Mid-Con individual championships. "She is paving the way for our athletes here at SUU. I expect her to be at the olympic trials again,· said SUU Track and Field Head Coach Eric Houle.
