Those trained as com pute r control machinists can command sta rt ing hourly wages well above ave rage thal cu n be doubled urter four years. Southern Utah Universi ty's CNC progi:am is designed to train machin ists who can step right in to positions upon gradua ti on. The program cove rs four of SUU's qua rte rs, typically from la te Septe m ber throu gh the following year's September. and includes instruction from 7 a.m. to l p.m .. Monday th rough Friday. Th is a llows students the freedom of the ir a fte rnoons to pursue afte r-sch ool em ployme nt or othe r inte rests. Th ere is a m in imum of homewo rk in the course. Addi tionally. ope n-e n try schedulin g is ava ilable fo r those who w ish to enroll at their conven ie nce. CNC students are typically me n and wom en who a re recent high sch ool graduates an d who a re re tra in ing after several years in the job m arket. The course, taught in SUU's m ach ining Ja b of the Technology Building, con sists of two hours o f class time and fo ur h ou rs of lab time daily. p roviding h ands-on instruction a n d learning. Subjects incl ude Shop Safety, Shop Math, Blueprint Reading, Precision Measurem e nt, Ma nual Control Machining and Computer Co ntrol Machin ing. The instructor is Roger Green er. wh o h as been a m achinist for 18 years an d who h as directed the suu program since its inception . CNC students at SUU enjoy all privileges accorded mainstream stude nts and, additionally, Joans. gran ts and othe r fi nancial aid is available to qualified students.
