Show 2 UNIVERSITY PREVIEW • SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY • FALL 1996 Comm stresses hands-on study The most unique thing about our program is the blend of theory and hands-on appl ication, said Communication Department Head Frain Pearson. Students trying to decide on a major may want to find out about the communication department curriculum. Students graduate from this program with specific job training skills and with general skills that can he applied to working in professional organizations. In the communication department, t he re are fo ur ways for students on campus to involve themselves with hands-on experience. Radio 9 11 , the department ra di o stat ion, provides tudents w ith ex perience not o nl y as DJ's, hut as on-air news reporters, and program di rectors. Second, the Uni versity Journal (the ca m pus newspapcr l gives student a chance tu lea rn the responsibiliti es of reporting and edit ing before th.ey find an internship and, in fact, provides inte rnships it elf tn some students. Third, SUTV, C hannel 9, involves students in th e art of tel<.:vision. It gives t hem valuable ex perience in news and sport broadcasting an d public info rmat ion progra mming. In addition Pearson sa id, " We have begun an advertis ing and publi c relations labora to ry as well. " In this type of lab, students learn, th rough hands-on experience, practical knowledge involved in advertising, and public relations. The department also sponsors a high ly-rated forensic program that has been successful for a number of years. Pearson attributes this success to the caliber of students and the coaches. Among the many awards garnered by the forensic students are four AllAmericans and one "Best Speaker in the Nation" Award. Both specific and general skills are taught by this departmen t . Specific skills are targeted at preparing students for the job market. These skills apply to professionally oriented degrees. General s kills are taught beca use they equip students with effective thinking and communication skills which will help them achieve t heir personal goal s.
