The 'Birds are facing what some are calling the toughest schedule in the school's history. While most students were away for the summer, the Thunderbird football squad arrived almost two months early to prepare for the season. Some may have wished they had stayed home after two early disappointing losses at Northern Arizona University and Angelo State. In the first of two losses, the Lumberjacks from NAU hacked away at the SUSC defense as they rolled to a 55-1- 3 victory. Northern Arizona is picked to be a power in the Big Sky Conference this season and had no trouble avenging a loss two years ago at the hands of the 'Birds. The Lumberjacks scored on their first four possessions and never looked back, intercepting two passes and recovering two fumbles, one in the end zone for a touchdown. It didn't get any easier for the 'Birds as the team traveled to San Angelo, Texas to take on the 1987 Lone Star Conference cochampion, Angelo State Rams. Once again the Thunderbird's opponent scored quickly, posting an early 21-- 0 lead, and finished the first half leading 27-SUSC's lone score came on a one yard run from Kelvin Minefee, capping a 70 yard drive. San Angelo had possession of the ball 23 of the 30 minutes in the second half, but the Thunderbird defense made two goal line stands and allowed only a field goal in the entire half. Nevertheless, the Rams kept the ball out of the hands of the 'Bird offense and thumped them 30-After the 2 start, SUSC returned home to face the second ranked team in the NAIA, the Mavericks of Mesa College. Several big plays and a powerful running game propelled the 'Birds to a 42-2- 8 triumph. With the Mavs ahead 28-2- 1 midway fourth the through quarter, Thunderbird player Michon lohnson ran back a 94 yard punt return to even the score at 28. Southern Utah never trailed again as running back Kelvin Minefee ran for 253 total yards, including a 99 yarder for a touchdown that set an SUSC record for longest run from scrimmage. The 253 yards was the second best in the school's history. "That was a big win for us because was beginning to doubt myself," said head coach Jack Bishop. "I think that's as good a Mesa team as I've ever seen. They stand to play for the NAIA national championship, or close to it, and we beat them." 7. $25.00 PERMS 5.00 HAIRCUTS Only at SHEAR DLTIE LORI WILLIAMS Vitivie. ititipft'jt; (UtirVi, it 'i ; 7. 27 NORM MAIN STREET (NEXT TO CEDAR CINEMAS) Expires 100788. 6ww- - - - - 0-- .J "' JLLIJ I TACO BURGER, SMALL FRY ADO MEDIUM DRINK N Runners win at San Berdoo m- r4s David Dix misses course record by two seconds; continues first place roll to lead team and field - BY DAREN 4i itM 60 FROZEN sac Home HALF PRICE ON flLL FOOD ITEMS MONDAY NIGHT FROM 5 TO 8 YOGURT FLAVORS (6 DAILY) BJOW OPEN TOPPIDIGS GOURMET YOGURT SHAKES The women placed tenth Cengler's third place finish Buy a regular or larger and get a COME TASTE THE DIFFERENCE 80 W CENTER CEDAR CIN in the tournament, led by Jackie in a field of 96.
