And a team is exactly what Murphy hopes to build. Success is no stranger to the SUSC forensics squad. In 1987 it finished second in the National Individual Events Tournament, the most prestigious competition in the nation. Over the past five years, the individual events branch of the team has consistently qualified in the top five at NIET. "Consistently, this school has won the sweepstakes award for being the top in intercollegiate forensics nationally for schools this size," said Murphy. Before coming to SUSC, Murphy worked in the debate program at University Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). Prior to coaching debate, he attended the Texas Tech law school, where he received his doctorate in jurisprudence. He also holds a master's degree in speech communication. He's replacing Suzanne Larson, who is on leave for the year. The forensics team undertakes a rigorous schedule each year, and Murphy thinks SUSC's calendar adds to the team's challenge. "I'm convinced that the quarter system is the worst for forensics. Our first tournament occurs before school even starts," said Murphy. Bad timing aside, Murphy has high hopes for this year's squad. He said one team in particular, Dave Sproul and Melinda Riding, has a good chance of succeeding at the national debate. He also anticipates a tournament in high finish for the team in the Rocky Mountain region this year. The squad generally places in the top five regionally. "For its size and depth, SUSC has the top forensics program in the country," Murphy said. Forensics is a demanding activity, said Murphy. Long hours of commitment to research and case writing takes its toll on some, but Murphy doesn't question his debaters' sense of responsibility. He said they are the type of individuals who set reasonable goals and work to achieve them.
