Show The Thunderbird Tuesday February 18, 1986 Page 7 Bill Honeck is new Mr. SUSC BY PAIGE WHITE It was like something out of a bad dream. For a minute I thought I had stepped into the twilight zone, and then I realized that I had reached thats right, the limits of the ASSUSCs imagination the Mr. SUSC pageant! The pageant came off largely due to the keen mind and talented efforts of Jean Wiser, ASSUSC Clubs and Organizations Director. Contestants for the evening of Feb. 13 The beach wear competition proved to be one of the most exciting moments of the evening s festivities. included Brad Giles, Kent Hinchcliff, Marty Prettyman, Mike Brady, Jeff Swindlehurst, Bill Honeck, Marty Harris, and Rocky Yusufzai. Walking away with the crown and the title of Mr. SUSC, after a tie breaking conference with the judges, was Honeck, who had tremendous stage presence and presented a selection of poetry by Lucy Smith entitled Faces of Poverty. Honeck said he ran because, I saw it last year and it looked like a lot of fun. Honeck also explained why he chose to read poetry, I thought it was something no one else would do. is Harris, who First runner-ucertainly caught the attention of everyone present as he walked out in an Air Force Academy cadet uniform and proceeded to inform us that we were not going to be entertained, but we would enjoy his performance as he kicked off his shoes and peeled down to a pair of skimpy shorts in the style of the old burlesque queen Gypsy Rose p Lee. is Yusufzai. Doing a Second runner-u- p native Afghani dance, he showed grace and style and a real understanding of his culture. The hostess, Jan Shelton, started us off with her brilliant wit and a soaring leap onto the beach with Beach Ware!! Each and every aspect of the beach was models showed great in sight-ou- r originality and a sense of style as they presented looks such as the traditional surfer by Giles, the surprise wear aspect as done by Prettyman and the Thurston Howell the Third look which was designed by Brady, and Swindlehursts version of beach vare! Soon after followed the talent portion of every good pageant. Besides our three main men, outstanding performances also included a man woman imitation by Giles lip synching You Dont Bring Me Flowers, Prettyman doing a unique version of You Are My Sunshine with candles, and Swindlehurst singing Does the Spearmint Lose its Flavor On the Bedpost Overnight?, and Brady gave us a sparkling rendition of the Scottish drum with bagpipe accompaniment, kilt and all! The evening wear was lar from typical, ranging from the ever dapper tuxedos to the essential but non-descre- no mi k Bill Honeck won the Mr. SUSC title in Thursdays competition. uniform of the republic, as Swindlehurst once again reminded us of his ever present sense of humor, while a few in the audience are still trying to follow the running gag of our stereotypical view of Russia through a Wendys commercial. However, this also serves to remind us that the pageant is done in fun and its the spirit of everyone involved which counts as Harris said, It was a hell of a lot of fun, not only for the contestants, but for everyone thats what it is meant for.
