Groves was hired by the San Francisco Giants club as an associate scout for southern Utah. He will be keeping an eye on Utah baseball talent at the high school, junior college, and college levels. Groves will still be at the helm of the Southern Utah baseball program. Armstrong was honored with being named the Thunderbird Baseball Player of the Year and was contacted by the L.A. STATE BANK OF SOUTHERN UTAH 26 North Main, Cedar City This was one of the best hitting teams SUSC has ever seen, said Groves. Every team member was very aggressive at swinging the bat and wanted to get a hit. We werent supposed to be a power team, but we were just four homers short of another team record. After rewriting the 1985 record books, Armstrongs career totals set new marks in games played, most runs, most doubles and most stolen to three bases. Armstrong also led the team offensive records: most hits, most doubles, and most runs scored (seven per game). I attribute our success to hard work in the hitting fundamentals during the off season, Groves said. Floyd was a main ingredient in the team this year. He will be sorely missed and hard to replace. Groves, in his new duties, may be able to get a better look at prospects, though. I think its a great opportunity not only for myself, but now the people in this area will know that somebody is watching them move up through the baseball ranks, said Groves. Groves, one of the youngest collegiate coaches in the nation, will report to his.boss in Sacramento on the talent in Utah. This boss, in turn, relays Groves information directly to the Giant organization. This gives me the opportunity to watch players of all ages and not only promote the San Francisco Giants, but southern Utah as well, Groves said. I think that my new assignment will greatly help Thundei'bird baseball. Classified HELP WANTtPM e Student job. Assist with The male athlete of the year is Stuart Adams.
