Show l I " TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS Science of Laundry 101: Some do's and don'ts Many new and exciting experiences are ahead for the first-time student living away from home. Some things will be exciting and some a bore. On the not-so-exciting list is doing one's own laundry. But it has to be done. There are washers- and dryers at most area apartment complexes as well as at the SUU dorms. There are also several laundromats in the area. Quarters can come in very handy. Ask any veteran SUU student and he or she will tell you that while laundering one must follow certain rules and adhere to a number of gujdelines. Even With miracle, machine-washable, synthetic fibers, and improvements in machines and detergents, which have made washdays a lot easier for all , a few laundry mistakes can ruin your day, not to mention your valuable and irreplaceable clothing. If you don't want to flunk Laundry 101 here are a few rules that have been ~ recommended by a major washing machine company. Dont's: • Don't put jeans with delicate fabrics in the same wash load. The delicates will lose the battle and bear the scars forever. • Don't try to jam everything into one load-you'll be wasting time and money. Clothes need room to move and flex in the washtub to get them clean. • Don't mix dark colors with whites, unless you don't care if your whites become dingy. • Don't wash colored clothes in hot water. They lose their brightness. Some fade and lose color. Here is a list of do's. • Check the washing instructions on the garment label. Follow the manufacturer's labels and add products accordingly. Some products like oxygen bleaches are added to the wash water before the clothes are added. Liquid fabric softeners go into the rinse water. • Use the specially designed permanent press wash and dry cycles for permanent press fabrics. To minimize wrinkling, the wash cycle has a special cool-down rinse; the drying cycle, a cooling-down period. • Use cold rinse water, as it saves energy, makes ironing easier and helps prevent permanent.press fabrics from wrinkling. • Pretreat soiled and stained spots before putting the item in the washer. • Use enough detergent. Don't use too much, though, or your washing machine will resemble an alien decomposing. Read the package. • Do your laundry fairly often, once a week if possible. The longer you wait the harder it is to remove soils and stains. The hard to remove turn into the impossible to remove.
