It began innocent enough. Our seventh grader was given the assignment to make and label an insect collection. Its an interesting aspect of parenting. A large majority of us moms and dads tend to worry about large assignments given to our children, much more than the kid does himherself. Kyle, hows the bug collection coming? Its not due for four weeks, he responded. I dont want you to put it off to the last minute, I lecture. Several weeks go by. So Kyle, hows the insect collection doing? Its not due for two weeks, mom. You need to get going on it, I say firmly. Your future may depend on it. On bugs? He asks. Hey have you seen the Nintendo controller? Forget Nintendo, I say in socio-econom- ic exasperation. This bug collection is an important part of your science grade. If you dont do well in science, you will get a bad grade for the semester, which in turn will put you into a lower high school science class, and you will bomb out on scholastic achievement tests. This will hurt your chances of getting into a good college, and you will probably have to struggle through your life making a living as a shoeshine boy.. .all because you didnt turn in a decent bug collection.
