Concerned retirees were assured by Orton that Social Security funds could not legally be used by the government for anything else. Orton admitted that Social Security has its problems, however. You spend more for Social Security than you do for federal income tax, said Orton. He said that when the program was created, the average American! life expectancy was much lower. The rates charged were based on the lower age, meaning that Social Security didnt count on a worker retiring at 65 and living until 78. The bottom line being since the worker is collecting benefits much longer than anticipated, the program is paying out a lot more, than it has taken in from him. Kanab resident Roger Holland suggested that people be allowed to take the money collected for Social Security, and create their own retirement plan. Orton responded that there would be a risk of a privatized investor goingunder, and the worker losing hisher retirement money. The Congressman said different solutions to cure the ailing program are being looked into, such as raising the retirement age, and creating a personal investment program, with some kind of built in safety net. In a brief overview of whats going on in Washington, Democrat Orton said that its been a trying time, with much political back-bitin- g and partisanship. He said that the 200 year-ol- d debate over federalism is still going on. Even back then, they debated whether we actually WEDNESDAY AUGUST 16, 1995 COLOR COUNTRYS HOME TOWN NEWSPAPER 50e from Lake Powell National Park Service divers recovered the body of Thomas Bird, 42, Bountiful, Utah, on Wednesday, August 9, in the Gunsight area of Lake Powell. Since the last election, many politicians believe that Americans want the Federal government to shrink. Orton said that the main concern in Washington, as it is almost anywhere, is money. Mr. Bird was vacationing with family and friends in the Warm Creek Bay area and had gone to look for another campsite in a small boat with his son and nephew. Upon locating a beach in the Gunsight area, Mr. Bird left the boys on the beach while he planned to return to fetch the remaining party members. Bird had gone approximately 300 yards from the shoreline when he called to his son. The boys were able to see Bird in the water but were unable to assist him. National Park Service divers were assisted in the dive operation by divers from theArizona Department of Public Safety, Arizona Game and Fish, and local citizens who make up the Glen Canyon Dive Team. Recovery efforts began immediately upon being notified of Mr. Birds disappearance on Sunday morning. This brings the total number of accident related fatalities for this year to six. Other fatalities resulted from carbon monoxide poisonings, a drowning, a motor vehicle accident and a water skiing accident. KANAB WEATHER August Courtesy: Frank Swapp Family |
