Show 29 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JANUARY 24, 1990 Public Notice Straight Shots and Backlashes PUBLIC NOTICE The Southwest Utah District Board of Health will hold public hearings on adoption of underground storage tank regulations. Hearings will be held at the following places ana times: PUBLIC NOTICE By Bob McKay (Editor's Note: This is a new column on hunting and fishing that will appear approxi- mately every two weeks. Bob McKay bought the Vaughn Judd ranch in Johnson Canyon last spring and plans to run a hunting operation there. He has written for national magazines, including Outdoor Life and American Hunter.) Utah's deer hunting seasons ended just two months ago and already the regulatory processes for this years seasons are well under way. Floyd Coles, regional game manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources, was in Johnson Canyon last Wednesday despite the snow and spent several hours with me discussing the background and problems associated with the nation's premier mule deer our own hunting area Paun-saugu- nt unit. "When I was in the Divisions booth at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's annual meeting in Washington State, the first and most quesr tions posed all related to the Paunsaugunt deer hunts, not elk," Coles said. Coles seemed sincerely concerned about local input to help the Division and Big Game Board in making key decisions for the Paunsaugunt unit. However, no public input sessions are scheduled closer than St. George or Salina and those hearings wont be held until late March. The Southern Regional Office must submit its written recommendations to Salt Lake by Feb. 22 and the draft proclamation and handbook will be prepared by March 16, both prior to the public input sessions. "One thing that can be done," Coles said, "is for the locals to form a committee and submit a summary of their suggestions." This presents not only a logistics 'and time frame problem. but the concerns of rank and file hunters are often different from the concerns of the landowncrhunter who also feeds huge numbers of deer in his fields and leased grounds Get these two groups together at a general meeting and the net result generally adds up to a big fat zero. But maybe there is a way to solve this dilemma. Sylvan Johnson has agreed to receive comments by phone from those eligible for Private Lands Permits and Wayne Button has agreed to do the same for others wishing to have their feelings known by the Wildlife Resources Division and Big Game Board. Both these people have been furnished all available statistics on the Paunsaugunt deer hunts and five optional recommendations for the future prepared by the Wildlife Division. Prior to the specified deadlines, gathered information will be summarized in written form and delivered to both the Division and Big Game Board. The summary will appear in this column prior to the March public hearings. Sylvan Johnson can be reached at and Wayne Button at (days) and (evenings). 644-591- 644-54- 62 644-810- 0 4 , Remington Arms Company is recalling all .17 Rem.
