Kanab and Kane County are certainly included in this group A recent article in the paper reported a decline m the school enrollment This resulted m the loss of two teaching jobs. Energy Fuels has been reducing their work force. It is reported that a small business in Kanab is planning to move to St George. Individually these do not seem to have a great impact on the economic base but collectively they have a large impact. What are some of the options Kanab and Kane County have to expand our economic base. We hear about coal development, establishing industrial parks and encouraging small business to locate in the area All of these have merit and continued effort needs to be spent to bring these to a successful compleuon For your information and another possible area to explore is an article in a national financial publication A small town on the east coast was dependr nt on a fabric manufacturing plant as its main economic base The plant closed and the town found themselves m desperate straits However, the local people, includowning the political leaders, land ers, developers, contractors and nearly all citizens joined together to make the town attract 1400 retirees in two years The economic impact on the town was greater than the fabric mill had ever been. Retailers, contractors, medical facilities, banks, etc., all reported that this was the best thing that had ever happened to the community. Many new businesses were bom. This article also reported a town in Minnesota that had done the same thing. Why not Kanab and - Kane County. We have all the ingredients the retired person is looking for, good climate, scenic beauty and most important, security (minimal crime). We can do it if all segments of society would pull together in a common cauw that would benefit every citizen in Kane County. Do you agree?
