"It takes about 96 gallons of water to produce a pound of grass, Grass fact No. 7. Range grass plants use about 96 gallons of water to make a pound of dry forage. Woody or shrubby plants use about 288 gallons of water to produce one lb of usable forage. Pasturing doesnt change these facts. For example, if 90 "percent of a range is occupied by perennial shrubs that stock do not use much of, h this range will produce only as much grass as it would if the brush were removed. Non use will allow this 10 percent of grass to get stronger, and eventually it may fill in as the brush does, but the brush has a hbit of living for a long time. Stockmen are patient, but they cant wait that long. If the range has only a scattered stand of sagebrush, and. is mainly grass, then by strengthening the grass' through proper use the brush may be weakened and killed. But, this is a long process. No system of grazing will change the amount of water that falls on a range No magical range plants will yield well without rain. A good grass cover will hold more of the rainfall on the land making it available to plants rather than allowing it to rapicSly run off into the creek. When a range is poorly managed, water furnishes cheap transportataion for soil as it leaves the ranch. A brushy range is likely to continue to be a brushv range for a long time, even with good management. It doesnt help much to try to manage a 100 percent stand of brush. The brush on this range will take 100 percent of the available wa- There is still time to space for concessions Kane County Fair to be Orderville, August 17, .
