Humber Of Orderville, Utah August 26, 1958 Mr. Errol Brown, Editor Southern Utah News Kanab, Utah Dear Mr. Brown, May we, as citizens of Kane County, express our appreciation for your efforts to obtain better government for our county. Un-t- il our own unfortunate experi j ence with the Kane County Commissioners, we did not fully appreciate what you have been trying to tell the people but now we feel a deep respect for your efforts. As representatives of a large group of Kane County citizens, we have been working with the County Commissioners in an effort to get some action on county library service. We feel that every taxpayer and voter of Kane County should know just what has happened, and we would very much appreciate it if you would publish this letter. Some time ago, the Kane County Commissioners appointed a committee to investigate the possibility of improving library service in Kane County. Upon investigation, the committee found many convincing reasons for obtaining Bookmobile service by affiliating with the Utah State Library. 1. Federal and state funds are available to help with rural library service and, with the help of those funds and with cooperation between the counties, it would be possible for Kane County toiTave regular Bookmobile visits, making available fifty thousand books to our citizens. This, of course, could not be done on our own resources Hew A former Kanab City CouncilTeachers Listed man and Kane County Commiswas "Tone recognized sioner, fc as one of the countys finer civic For Kane Schools ' and church workers. Utah State law provides that the county may levy a one mill county library tax and apportion to Kanab City the part of it collected there for the operation of the Kanab Library. Thus, Kanab City could drop its one mill levy; Kane County could turn over to the city the tunemnt collected there, and the balance of the tax collected in the county could be used to obtain Bookmobile service for every town in the county, Including Kanab! So, for not one penny more tax on Kanab City property, the citizen of that city could have everything they now have, PLUS the Bookmobile, and there would be no need for any change in the administration of the present library. It would still be the Kanab Municipal Library. With this in mind, representatives of the Kanab City Council requested that the County Commissioners levy the tax. 3. An overwhelming majority of taxpayers in the Valley area signified on a petition their desire for library service and their willingness to pay the required one mill tax levy. At the meeting of the Kane County Commissioners August 11, five delegates requested that the Commissioners levy the legal one mill county library tax and appoint a County Library Board to administer it. A legally correct petition to this effect was presented to the. Commissioners.
