Increasing Interest Is Building Up On Better Roads for Strip Country The following letter to Gov. McFarland of Arizona and to other leaders in Arizona, has been sent out by Mrs. Malissa Jensen in the interest of better roads through the strip country. Also, the accompanying letter by Mrs. Vonda McKinney, we feel, will help arouse Interest in this much needed road that will benefit all of Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. "Fredonia, Arizona April 28, 1956 Honorable Ernest W. McFarland Governor of Arizona State Capitol Phoenix, Arizona Dear Governor McFarland: As you know, we feel the Strip Country of Arizona has desperately needed a good, hard top highway, suitable for heavy traffic which would connect Highway 89 at Fredonia, Arizona to Highway 91 at Hurricane, Utah. This road, which is at this time partially gravelled and partially a graded dirt road is now designated as the Road and traverses approximately 30 miles In Northern Arizona, entering the State of Utah approximately 3 miles northwest of Short Creek and thence 20 miles over Utah County Road No. 59, where it intersects US Alternate 91, which is the main highway from Los Angeles and other California points to Salt Lake City and the East. The State of Utah has, I understand, approved hard surfacing of that part of this road which lies in Utah which will make it possible to carry heavy traffic to the Arizona line. We urge you to give ut some Immediate, active and .Influential support to have the Arizona portion of this road hard suryear-roun- d Fredon-la-Sho- Creek-Count- rt y faced, , The benefits to be derived from California and Southwestern Utah traffic moving over this route, to the entire Arizona Strip County and to the town of Fredonia, would be considerable because: 1. This route would be used by a great Influx of tourists since it would provide a most scenic route for the tourist driving from Los Angeles, California or Las Vegas, Nevada, to the new Glen Canyon dam site or to any points north or south of Fredonia on Highway 89. 2. It would provide the shortest truck route from the West Coast to the Glen Canyon Dam. Via: Fredonia to Kanab, Utah and thence to the dam site. 3 Commercial transportation via trucks would furnish considerable tonnage of materials related to the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam at the most economical rate from the West. 4. The elevation of this strip country highway averages 4800 feet and does not exceed 5000 feet at any point, making it particularly adaptable to the transportation by truck of fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishables without the precautions required through north and south routes to the dam site area during winter months. 5. The Arizona Strip Country, which has long been neglected relative to the rancher and cattlemen, would derive great economic benefits as their transportation facilities would be greatly improved., 6. The present headquarters of Federal and State Grazing agencies and other rancher and cattlemen's agencies and related business houses which now manage the business affairs of the Arizona ranchers and cattlemen in the Arizona Strip Country out of St. George and Cedar City, Utah would certainly move by choice or by federal and State requirements to Fredonia, as they rightfully belong In Arizona instead of, Utah. , 7. The bringing of heavy traf 41 LcscI Ilcfisss basis. Utah' Dear Editor, In last weeks paper the Roving Reporter stated: Fredonia is like a man without a country. Referring to the Strip Road from Hurricane to Fredonia, he stated: Arizona would not help us with the road and Utah cant. As far as Utah is concerned, we do not expect them to carry the road any further than to the Arizona line for that part of the road we are happy to accept their cooperation. However, the actual facts if relation to the Arizona' side of the question are farjlifferent from-wh- at your statement implies. As of up to this date the state of Arizona has had noT jurisdiction in relation to this road, it has been solely the property of Mohave County. A very poor county incldently, with a very small population and large expanses of very low tax rated ground (except for formerly high taxed property that supported Short Creek school and the United Effort). There is not one place of business on this road at the present time, no revenue goes to the county from business. It is very easy to see why Mohave County has been reluctant to push this road when they do not have the revenue to W, S.LM, LAND OFFICE Salt Lake City, Utah May 2, 1956 Under section provisions of 2455, R.S, as amended by section 14 of the act of June 28, 1934 (48 Stat, 1274; 43 U.S.C. 1171), and pursuant to the application of Vem Harris Anderson, .Glendale, Utah Serial No. 017111, there will be offered to the highest bidder, but at not less than $2.50 per acre, at a public sale to be held at 10 oclock a.m, on the 26th day of June, 1956 next, at this office, the following tracts of land: SWHNWV Sec. 26, T. 40'S, R. 7 W SLM, con- - NEH-NW- 11. Now and only now will the State of Arizona be able to begin work on this Issue. For anyone interested in the progress and support of this road I suggest you contact Malissa Jensenwho has spent considerable time in gathering data in relation to it and who has recently contacted Gov. The present road Is not considered adequate for the Strip Country lumber, operations on a 10. There is at the present time over half a million acres of Arizona Strip Country land under lease for oil and gas prospecting. This road would tend to encourage exploration activities and would materially aid In the bringing In and out of heavy equipment and the moving out of crude oil as this drilling program is carried out. (The first deep exploratory test is to be started in the Strip Country by June 1st of this year.) 11. Lastly, there is one thing that our good friends In Short Creek couldnt stand and that Is an influx and infiltration of tourists, and, however important or unimportant Is seems to you, It should be the end of the polygamous problem in that area, which has certainliy been a blight on the state of Arizona for some time. We, here in Fredonia, believe that there is a great future for this community and for the entire Strip Country, and we are of the opinion that the big opportunity to bring this to successful fruition soon is to get this road constructed and to get It done immediately. This road will not require Federal funds that would be taken away from the money appropriated for the construction of the Glen Canyon dam and conversely, this very road could quite conceivably result in a great benefit and saving to those who construct the dam and to the businesses which will spring up related to this construction. We again urge you to give this matter very careful study and take the initiative to get this job started. MacFarland recently said if the townsite at Glen Canyon is put on the northwest side of the Colorado River that Utah had to take the Strip country. (Actually what he said was he would suggest Arizona give Utah the five mile strip from the damsite to the Utah line and let Utah foot the bills of schools, roads, marshalling, etc.) The Utah people (according to rumor) say they dont want the Strip period. To the residents of the Arizona Strip, I suggest, we secede and set up our own state whereby we will own the Glen Canyon Damsite and by cooperation with the Navajo Tribal Council we can do what we well please. Fredonia could be our state capitol as well as county seat and as we know some of the residents of Southern Utah who make their livelyhood on the Strip (which Incldently, residents In the capitol at Phoenix appear not to know) we could probably Increase the taxes of these outsiders enough to pay our state and county officers.
