Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. according to Mayor Arland Brook-sby- . Nomination petitions for the five offices of the council for Arland Brooksby, George Johnson, Z. Ray Judd, Lenn McKinney aqd Arden Judd, were filed Monday, May 7th, with Town Clerk R. L. Roper. Voter Qualifications No person shall be qualified to vote at any election in any such city who is not qualified to register and vote at. election of County Officials, and who shall not also have resided for six months continuously preceding such election. See the advertisement on page six for more details. Quin-canno- School Students Hi Plant Willows Planting willows along Kanab Creek has become an institution with the schools at Kanab. Ev- ery spring for the past five or six years, students have spent a half day throwing sand in each others eyes, splashing in the water, and Incidently planting a few willows in the bars that have built up at the waters coun-cilme- Sherriff Wayne (Slim) Lathim at which time he was also sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff. At such time as the town requires equipment for the upkeep of the streets, Mr. Judd will take over these duties also. At the same meeting, the council appointed Duane Judd as Fire Chief. Plans are being made to improve fire fighting equipment at the earliest possible date. At present the flushing of fire hydrants could speed up the fire fighting operations immensely. Peppy Day Saturday The Kanab American Legion Auxiliary announce that they will hold their Poppy Day sale Saturday, May 19th. They ask your help in the sale. By wearing a Poppy, you will be helping some disabled veteran. In making the 1956 plantings, D. Wayne Rose, County Agent and Earl Spendlove, Soil Conservation Service technician furnished the know-how- . Elson Riggs, Secretary of the Kane County Soil Conservation District furnished a tractor to plow the furrows and cover the willows; and Messrs. Jameson and Tietjen of the Kanab Schools rode hard on the 8th and 10th grades while they cut willows from a plant- ing made by the Veterans Class In 1949 and placed them in the furrows. The same day the plantings on the creek were made, the 10th grade planted trees and shrubs that will eventually hide the city dump. Many fine horses have come in to run with the local horses, and according to Blake Robinson, racing association secretary, Indications point to some fast and interesting races. Local horsemen this year seem to have their horses in top shape and in most cases will be hard to beat at most distances. Saturday racing will again get underway in the early afternoon. The Jaycees have constructed a new refreshment stand at the track and will serve food and most kinds of soft drinks. Both days during the racing there will be events of one kind or another between races -- lo'Jkeep the crowds attention and make the meet more interesting. Fights Saturday Saturday evening, under the chairmanship of Boyd Adams, a fine fight card has been lined up. The fights will be held in the high school gym and are to be followed by a big dance, also in the high school Reserved seat tickets for the fights may be purchased at Fentons Store or at the Standard Publishing Company for $2.00. Interesting Article Off Local Area in Outdoor A very interesting article on Thunder River, Jack Church, Spike Heaton, Ernie Appling and Rusty Jarboe, appears in the May Issue of Outdoor Life. The article written- by Charles C. NIehuls with many beautiful photos in full color, gives this area and Kanab some mighty fine publicity. The article Is chuck full of good information back to the time of Hades Church and Billy Swapp and will no doubt give many sportsmen from this area as well as around the nation a desire to accompany Jack into this primitive and interesting river at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. - Whiting also presented special awards to all members of the senior seminary class.
