Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 15, 2001 Dixie Speaks attended the Kane County tax hearing last Monday evening and have four comments. Incidentally, I attempted to voice them at the hearing, but was unable to. People attending public hearings need to be aware that it's a forum for everyone, not just a dominant few. I 1) Is the county spending its money wisely? Working at the newspaper, I have the opportunity (unfortunate as it were) to review all budgets. All I can say the fat. They have a bare bones budget, and are operating with fiscal responsibility. Go get a copy of the budget and scrutinize it. There are few people more prudent than I. We have four sons. I'm used to trying to squeeze blood from a turnip! is-fi- nd 2) Who gets your tax dollars? Get your tax bill, and really look at it. We have a number of taxing entities in this county, many of which take a huge chunk of your tax dollar. We feel there needs to be more scrutiny and accountability of special service district spending. 3) It was suggested that another county sales tax was a better option than a property tax increase. Please! We have one show in town, and (good or bad) it's tourism! That may not be fair, but it's reality. So why penalize our only potential for revenue here? Our gas is too high, our food is too high, and our lodging is too high, and we want to tack on another tax? 4) As I said last week, most of our current economic situation can be blamed on ourselves. While we have moments, we aren't nice to people with new ideas, and those who aren't from here. So, what's the answer to this county surviving? Increase our tax base through new or existing business! The county and school are having to once again go to the taxpayers, because they simply have few other means of revenue. Kane County's survival will come when we embrace outsiders with new ideas. Gestures of kindness Parting thank you Dear Friends: Words cannot begin to express the love that was felt by my family and me during the illness and passing of our dad, and hus- band, Fred Johnson. The gestures of kindness shown by visits, phone calls, food, cards, flowers, and monetary gifts was an overwhelming ex- perience. Weve always known that we were living in the greatest place on earth, and it has been proven to us once again. The future will be lonely for we will miss Fred so much, but with your continued love and support, well make it through. Dear Editor: My sister and I have spent two enjoyable months here in Kanab at the Crazy Horse RV Park, Since we came here it is under new management, and it has been cleaned up and improved, In our opinion it is the nicest and most private one in town, Our thanks go out to Ruth & Howard for making our stay so enjoyable.
