Mr. Judd has been a part of Prescott Unified District since he came to town in 1936 and taught sixth grade at Lincoln Elementary School. Judd has a grandson, Eric Judd, in this community. Even after he retired in 1975, Judd remained a part of the dis- trict. When a new elementary school opened on Williamson Valley Road in 1989, it was christened Abia Judd Elementary School, thereby immortal iz ing Mr. Judd for his decades of service. Sharingmanydetailsof Judds life was Mary Anne Kapp, a former principal at the Abia Judd School. Judd was bom in Fredonia, Arizona, a small town about five hours from Prescott. He obtained a two-yea- r teaching certiticatc from Dixie College and taught in Fredonia for seven years. It seemed that teaching was in his blood and he obtained his four-yea- r teaching certificate from Northern Arizona Teachers College. In 1936 he arrived in Prescott to teach at Lincoln and Miller Valley Elementary, but interrupted his teaching to serve in the Army. Returning from the war, he took a leave of absence to obtain a masters degree in education from the University of Iowa. In 1953, Judd became superintendent ofPrescott Unified School District, a post he held for 22 years until he retired. Kapp said that although Judd might not always have agreed with everyone with whom he worked, he always respected their differences and listened willingly to all ideas.
