Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY AUGUST 30, 1995 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Every once in awhile, I think that a compliment is in order. The county hospital jail space issue got entirely out of hand last week. Rumor and inuendo abounded as people angrily converged on the August 21 Kane County Commission hearing. By meeting time, I think some were convinced the county wanted state inmates to perform hospital surgical procedures. The commission could've saved themselves some grief if they had better informed the public. If a meeting notice had been published in the paper, or perhaps a fact sheet had been provided about the county's needs and options, some confusion and misinformation could've been dissipated. With that said. I'd like to personally compliment the commission on doing something not common around ahead. It's refreshing to see a governing entity looking ahead and anticipating needs, rather than reacting to and using stop gap measures when a crisis arises. As our county grows, so will its need for jail, court, and hospital space. That's simply a fact of life, no one can stop growth, even if they want to. What you can wisely do, is plan ahead and be cognizant of the fact that all things that are expanded or improved, cost money. Money that Kane County taxpayers will have to come up with. The Kane County Commission is trying to explore unique ways of funding infrastructure that we will soon need. They want to do this while attempting to minimize the impact on Kane County taxpayers. The majority of people didn't like the hospitaljail the commission knows. space idea-noThe commission didn't deserve the anomosity it received over the hearing, they were just trying to get public input. I think the Kane County Commission instead deserves the county's thanks for opening their eyes to the inevitable and planning ahead. here-planni- ng w Letters to the Editor for the past eight months.
