Girls State is being held from June 6 to 12. The girls attending include Rochelle Esplin, Jeanne Lamb, Shannah Drew, Debbie Hardy, Sharon Schmutz, Laurel Roberts, Connie Anderson and ee Robinson. Jeanne Lamb Is serving as a city judge for Ma-b- ey City and Laurel Roberts Is a state senator from Deni City One of the primary reasons for La-R- ? Citizens are encouraged to fly the flag during these days In this special salute. If spotlights are available, It is also appropriate to fly them at night under the spotlight. Also a bell ringing program Is being instituted across the nation for Sunday, July 4, during which time citizens from all over the country will pause for a few minutes in a bell ringing salute to the Independence of this great nation. Time for this program is Sunday, July 4 at 12 noon (Mountain Daylight Time) a.m. (Mountain Standard Time). The bell ringing will be at 2 p.m. In the east, at 1 p.m. In the central sons, at IS noon In the mountain region (11 a.m. inArizona)andat 11 a.m. In the Pacific zone. Residents are urged to join in local gatherings or to ring bells on their own at this time. In connection with the flag and bell ringing program, Fredonia will hold a program Saturday, June 12, at 6 p.m., then begin flying the flag. Then on July 4, at 11 a.m. (Arizona time) a short program will be held at the Fredonia Elementary School where the large bell there will be rung as part of the nationwide the Girls State program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, Is to help the girls gain a better understanding at government. Major, son of Mr. graduated from Southern Utah State College during the annual Commencement Exercises held June 4 at the upper Campus Quadrangle. Major was also honored as the Distinguished Scholar In the School of Sciences during the exercises. He also offered the Invocation at the commencement proceedings. He was also graduated with high honors. Each department of the college honors one student as a distinguished scholar and Major was selected In the School of Science. speak in their behalf. Senator Frank Church from Idaho, who Is a candidate for President of the United States had a spokesman at the convention. Congressman Alan T. Howe, also was represented at the meeting. Three other people were present to speak for gubernatorial candidates. Mrs Fay D. Hamblin of Kanab spoke la behalf of a nephew, Steven Dirk who Is a governor candidate. The group present selected Mrs. Betty VanDenBerghe to fill the one year unexpired term as county chairman made vacant by the resignation of Mrs. Sue Behle. They also chose three to represent Kane County at the State Democratic Conven tion on June 9. They were Sue Behle, Betty VanDenBerghe and Lloyd Vance. - Church Softball begins June 17. Tuesday, while on my visit to these dear people, Mr. Turpen told me of his plans for the patio and along with Ruby Swapp, who is one of the residents; Mr. Ben McQueen of Page, Arizona, whose mother Is also a resident; and myself discussed what 60, 4 America To Me. Directing the group Is Mrs. Kay Reher; accompanist Is Mrs. Janice Hobbs, and Mrs. S her rone Turner was the narrator. The presentation was especially enjoyed and appreciated by tbe girls at Girls State, and also by tbe members of the Harmony group. |
