Trouble last Friday with our linotype, and putting the entire length of our left index finger where it shouldnt be, leaves us with only one good hand this week. Our son Errol Jr. took Wednesday off from school at Dixie to help us out, ad we are giving you the best possible this week. Funny how one little finger can cause so much disruption, culture economics, and Dr, Smith is dean of tlie college of agriculture. Mr. House said the American farmer and rancher will never receive liis rightful share of prosperity until he regains his initiative in tlie marketing of his products. Speaking on Prosperity and Why Agriculture Was Left Out," he charged that federal manipulation has depressed agriculture while other segments of tlie economy have steadily improved their lot. Mr. House charged that the federal government deliberately held down prices of the farm products to prevent tlie cost of living index from rising. Withn the last 15 years agriculture has been allowed to drift into a position almost parallel to tl at just prior to the Great Depression in 1930," the speaker said. "While both wage-anbasic government debentures have at least doubled and possibly tripled, agriculture prices have declined cm an average of 15 jier cent As a result, he said farmers and ranchers have been living on borrowlgs rather than profit, causing tlie average farm debt to rise by 50 per cent within the last five years. Financiers are starting to question our liquidity," he stated. In addition to encouraging wage increases while decreasing the price of farm goods, Mr. House said the government, through loans and technical assistance, has helped foreign beef growers to enter the U. S. markets. The speaker charged that the federal government has protected the cost of living index by using its own stocks of grain to break" the market first on com and then on wheat He said that if agriculture is ever to recover from its depression price schedules, it will have to be on its own initiative through its organizations and its maketing associations and groups.
