They point out that the number of persons on farms may be decreasing, but those who remain are becoming increasingly more important. For example, at one time a farmer provided enough food for himself and eight others; now he supplies enough-- food for more than twenty others and this nutn-be- r is increasing. At the same time, they are becoming increasingly more important customers for others goods and services, over a third of all gainfully employed persons in the United States make their living directly or indirectly from agriculture. Farmers are now in the market each year for around forty billion dollars worth of things they need for production and family living. Farm people spend about eight billion dollars a year to buy, operate, and maintain the automobiles, trucks, and farm machines they need in their business. Farmers spend over two billion dollars just to buy and keep up .farm tractors.
