Wake Up , America, and Flex Your Your Muscles For years now America has based its foreign relations on the premise that if you are nice to another he will in return be a loyal friend. Recent events in Japan, Cuba, Panama, Okinawa and other countries prove the failure of our beiice-and-helpf- ul attitude. Not too many years ago Japan by their sneaky traitorous Pearl Harbor attack cost us thousands of young men before we detected them. We then gave Japan a gentle pat on the head and a mild "Naughty-Naught- y scolding and proceeded to help restore the previous enemy to new industrial riches and a democratic government. In turn our President cannot even visit Japan because of danger to his life. Cuba, a country we have aided for years, sneers in our face, and is becoming a communistic stronghold only 90 miles from our shores. We cannot any longer kid ourselves about the prestige of the United States. In too many places throughout the world we are neither feared nor respected. All of our citizens have deprived themselves for years to pay the taxes from which millions and millions of dollars have been shipped overseas as a kind gesture from good old Uncle Sam. They have taken our money and returned nothing but a few kind words. The actions of the recipient countries belie their words. Communism is slowly snaking its way into all parts of the world. Must we continue this absurd give-awa- y, this obvious diplomatic failure, as our only defense? Since this country has never been under enemy oppression and we for years have been the, powers of the world we go blithely along thinking nothing will ever happen to change that condition. Wake up, America! The situation is already changing - we are no longer the power we once were and with a continuation of our present approach to the problem we will continue to lose our power. Before our obvious enemies gain so much strength that they will ignore us altogether we must begin to talk tough, act tough and carry the big stick and let the rest of the world know exactly where we stand. This may be adverse to the policy America has followed for years but it may be our only life-savi- ng policy. Why fool ourselves any longer thinking that if we are a nice fellow everyone else will be a nice fellow? We are being insulted, sneered at, laughed at and scared. Our only reaction is to say, "Tut-tu- t, boys. Be nice now and we will send you more American dollars.' This policy is about as successful as a lead Zeppelin. Our country's freedom, our homes and the lives of our people are at stake. Wake up, America, and flex your muscles before it is too late. Lsi'ar to tho EdzT Mrs. J. C. Nation President . , Sus?r House B.P.W. Club 4980 Highland Drive Salt Lake City, Utah Editor: South East Independent Dear Mrs. Nation: We note that the "Resolution on Alcoholism" adopted by your organization and published in the 'South East Independent June 16, 1960, involves Alcholics Anonymous. The resolution states that individuals appointed to the State Board on Alcoholism by the Governor will be "recommended to the Governor by the General Service Committe of Alcoholics Anonymous." We are not aware of any such committee in Alcoholics Anonymous or of any contact made by your organization with local or State service committees of our fellowship regarding tHe resolution We are certain that if contact had been made with our trusted servants you' would have learned that Alcoholics Anonymous does not lend its name nor does it desire to become involved in any such matter of public controversy. The following definition adopted by our Fellowship clearly outlines our purpose, principles and position at the public level: "Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship .of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership- - we are self-supporti- ng through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other; alcoholics to achieve sobriety." It would be sincerely appreciated if you would delete Alcoholics Anonymous from the resolution. This will help us immeasurably in avoiding future implication. We hope you will not misunderstand our bringing this matter to your attention and that we have been able to provide you a better understanding of our fellowship. State A. A. We should be mighty hepped up about the inability of our children to read and write and we should be equally excited about the historical background of this county that is being taught them. Start to question them and see what they know. What are their ideas in regard to the United States and the United Nations. This particular area of the country is one of the most brainwashed in America when it comes to United Nationism. And we should all remember that these kids cannot be blamed for thinking and taking part in the things they do for, as parents, we did not Demand that they be taught properly. events. Japan recently, and is still being plagued, by student riots the climax of which prevented the president of the United States from visiting that country and the object now being the prevention of a U.S. Jap treaty. Vice-preside- nt Nixon was spit on and stoned by students in South America. Student demonstrations began the downfall of Chiang Kai-sh- ek and the ushering in of Mao Tse-tun- g. Sit down lunch-count- er protests in this country are studentaffairs. How come these students who have arrived in the University without the knowledge to read, write and spell correctly all of a sudden become experts in politics? Who is taking over the minds of your children? "The Christian Layman" reports: "It is now proposed by many American colleges and universities, especially by schools like Yale and Harvard and Union Theological Seminary, that we change our affirmation to the flag If a thing will go without saying let it. |
