The Magna Telephone exchange will become a part of the Salt Lake Metropolitan system at 12:01 a.m. June 5, 1960 according to William J. Twelves, local manager of the Mountain States Telephone Company. At the present time. Magna customers may call any of 3,500 telephones without a long distance charge. This will be increased to 133, 000 when the exchange is connected into the metropolitan system. At a cost of nearly half a million dollars, larger telephone cables are being installed between Magna and Kearns and Magna and Salt Lake City. Dial equipment is being added in the Magna, Kearns and Salt Lake City telephone buildings to handle the increased number of calls that will result when the long distance charges are eliminated between these exchanges. Calls between Magna and Bountiful numbers designated with an AXtel prefix, Holladay with a CRestwood number and the Murray-Midva- le zones with an AMherst prefix will be assessed a zone calling charge. The zone change will be the same as the present long dis-tance rate, however the minimum period which is now 3 minutes will be increased to 5 minutes with no corresponding increase in rate. In the Salt Lake Metropolitan area, customers in any zone may call within that zone or to an adjoining zone on a local basis. To call telephones in other zones, it is necessary to dial '0" operator and give the number of the desired telephone. A charge will apply to operator handled calls to non-adjoini- ng zones within the metropolitan area. Magna is adjacent to Kearns and Salt Lake zones, so no charge will apply for calls between these communities after midnight June 4. Coincident with the service improvement all telephone numbers in Magna will be changed to include a prefix of BYron 7. Telephone number plates will also include the Utah area number of 801 immediately preceeding the BYron 7 exchange number. Utah customers will never be required to dial the 801 prefix. The area number will be used only when out of State long distance calls are being placed to telephones in Utah. The telephone company plans to show this area number on all dial telephones within the State. New Salt Lake metropolitan telephone directories reflecting the number changes and including Magna listings alphabetically with other metropolitan customers, will be delivered prior to June 5. Customers wishing a change in their listings, other than that in-volved in the planned number change, should contact the telephone business office prior to April 14, when the new directory will go to press Twelves said. t - - A : ,. . r. crr.- :- --r ... w . - I ,. In some cases, a repair bill will be considered sufficient to support your deduction. The best thing, you can do is gather together any information that may help support the amount you claim as a deduction. For example, if your house is badly damaged, a qualified architect can often give a reasonable estimate of the before and after value. The appraisal fee, by the way, is a deductible expense. Theft Losses You can claim a deduction for the value of property that is stolen The problem in claiming losses from theft is that you will pro-bably have to show some evidence that the theft took place. Be sure that there is at least a police record of the theft and a report of any findings the police may have come up with. Also, you might keep track of news-- , paper ac bunts, insurance reports, and so on. Theft losses are deductible in the year you discover that your property is missing. Income' Tax Ideas This is one in a series of articles on federal income tax filing. These articles are based on information provided by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. You can get some relief from casualty and theft losses by taking advantage of the legitimate tax deductions you are allowed. To help you prepare a correct return and take advantage of legitimate tax savings, this news-paper is printing a series of four articles prepared with the help of the state and national organiza-tions o f certified public accountants. Today's article considers the problems you may have in claiming deductions for theft or casualty losses. Later articles will offer advice1 on other tax problems of particular interest to homeowners. Time and Destruction There are a great many ways in which your property can be damaged or destroyed, as for example, by fire, storm, flood, or explosion. Generally, a casualty which will give rise to a deduc-tible loss must occur with some suddenness. However, there are situations where the casualty occurs over a period of time and still results in a deductible cas-ualty loss. For example, consider the damage caused by termites. Say that you purchased your home in June 1957 and at that time a check by experts showed that there were no termites present. Then in February 1958, you discover that termites have been eating your house from under you. Can you claim a casualty damage? Yes, you can, even though the damage took place over a nine month period. The casualty here, is the in-vasion of your house by the termites. The money you have to spend to repair the damage to your house as a result of the termite invasion is a good measure of the amount you deduct as a cas-ualty loss. However, it is prob-able that a casualty deduction wili not be allowed where the termite damage did not occur over a relatively short period of time. The Property Must Be Yours You must have ownership of the damaged property to claim a loss deduction. 2t is quite con-ceivable that severe damage to the property around your house may cause the value of your property to decline. Although the damage occurred suddenly, you cannot claim a deduction for the loss in value unless your own property was actually damaged. You can claim a deduction for a drop in the value of your car due to an accident. This is true regardless of whether you or another driver is to blame, unless the accident is a result of your willful negligence. However, if you are responsible for a car accident and have to pay for damage inflicted on someone else's car, you cannot deduct the payment as a casualty loss. Proving a Casualty Loss; Determining the amount you can claim as a casualty loss may be very difficult. Generally you are allowed to claim the amount by which your property decreased in value. In other words, the difference between the value be-fore the casualty occurred and the value after the casualty. This may sound simple, but take a look around your house and count the number of items for which you could prove the sales value right now if you had to. After the Legals To Mortgagor by Mortgagee in proceeding to foreclosure and sale. By virtue of a chattel mortgage executed by Jeri H.
