It probably was produced from the 3assett Hound and Terrier blood- -. types; or lines. It was known in Egypt in 2622 B.C. It is sometimes supposed that this dog is the mod-ern Turnspit, however, the spit-turni- ng type was extinct by the beginning of the nineteenth century, and the Dachshund was not exhi-bited in Britain until 1866. It is used by sportsmen for badger-diggin- g, for which purpose it is specially bred and designed. It is quaint in appearance, but it has inbounded energy and a fascinating character. The height of the Dachshund is from 8 to 10 inches. The weight is heavy-weig- ht, 18-- 25 lbs., or light middle-weig- ht which is from 11 to 18 pounds. The color is black and tan. liver, red, chocolate and tan, and dapple. The coat of the Dachshund is short, smooth and close-lyin- g. The body is long ana low-se- t, compact and well muscled. The legs are short and sturdy; and the tail is long and tapering. |
