The following are a few suggestions which may be helpful: Fondant, the foundation of all French candies. Is very simple to make and a thermometer is not necessary, though the results are much more accurate when one is used. Fondant. Put two and one-hapounds of sugar into a smooth granite saucepan with one and one-haof a cupfuls of water and teaspoonful of cream of tartar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved then heat gradually to the boiling point and boil until a soft ball which will just keep Its shape (when tried In cold water) Is formed. By the thermometer it will be 238 degrees Fahrenheit. After a few minutes boiling, sugar will adhere to the sides of the saucepan and form grains ; these should be washed down with a small cloth fastened to a fork and dipped into hot water. This may be done with the hand If dipped Into cold water ancj the tips of the fingers used to wash off the sides of the pan. Being quickly done there is no danger of burning. When boiled to the soft-bastage, pour out on an oiled or lightly buttered marble slab or large platter. Let stand until it Is cold enough to bear the finger dipped into it. Stir with a wooden spoon, scraping from the outside, working it well until a creamy mass Is' formed, then knead with the hands and place the bail of fondant into a buttered bowl; cover with waxed paper and set away for a few days to ripen. Now the fondant is ready for any kind of flavor, color, fruit or nuts. Bits rolled Into balls may be dipped into chocochocolate, making the late "cream. Such pieces should, to give the best effects, conform closely in color and finish with the standing woodwork of the room of which they are practically a part. There are now many architects who specialize on the small house and some of these make much of quaint and effective built-i- n pieces in the interior arrangements. However, a frequent pitfall to the inexperienced Is the finish given this built-i- n furniture. Often it seems desirable to make these pieces appear as furniture ratfter than as part of the room. With this Idea such pieces are treated with different finish from that used on the standing woodwork, and always with disastrous effect. Where one must live in a house planned for another It is often possible to introduce some pieces of built-i- n furniture or advantageously. In the past there has been a certain prejudice against concrete for such purposes, principally because of the fear of dampness, but by applying the methods which have been developed to produce good concrete construction there need be no fear on this score. A concrete barn can be built which will be as thoroughly dry and warm as any other type of construction. In localities where the materials, sand and stone or gravel are available locally, the cost Is low. A concrete barn is a permanent structure and it affords protection against the danger of fire, an enemy which it is difficult, If not Impossible, to fight when it attacks farm buildings. Because of all this it will be interesting to take note of the concrete barn which is pictured here. The walls throughout are of solid concrete and the' roof is covered with a composition roofing which is also highly fire resistant, while the silo is built of brick. Aside from the materials of construction this barn differs little from any other first-clas- s dairy barn, the design following the lines which experience and scientific study have proven to be most advantageous for the handling of a dairy herd. The brick silo is placed at one end of a long central feed alley which extends the full length of the barn and makes it possible to serve all the pens and stalls quickly and with a minimum of labor, using an overhead conveyor track for handling the feed. At one side of the doorway from the silo into the main barn, there is a feed room, the contents of which can be handled by the same means. At this end of the building ' there are four special pens and beyond the cow stalls are placed in rows at either side of the central feed alley. These stalls are divided into groups leaving passages between which come opposite doors in the sides of the building. In all, there are 42 stalls, sufficient to accommodate a large herd.1 The number of stalls easily can be varied, however, by decreasing or increasing the total length of the building. Back of the stalls, at each side of the building, is a litter alley. Here again the overhead track is used for handling the litter in the quickest and most convenient manner and the tracks extend on down the length of v Onion.) waiern CANDY Mr. Builds up weak bodies 25$ and 75$ Pk$s.Sold Everywhere Away Goes Eczema Petersons Ointment ; d One day a druggist told me, says that Petersons Ointment Peterson, was the best remedy he sold for eczema.
