Show GUNNISON VALLEY HOSPITAL Compiled by LaRae Olsen EPHRAIM—Throughout her 90 years, Maxine Dean has taken her part in history. "I was 11 years old when Charles Lindbergh flew his plane across the ocean," she said. "At the time, I never dreamed that I would make the same flight, but I did, twice." Her great-grandfather came to the Salt Lake City Valley just two days after Brigham Young arrived. On the way, the company of settlers made it as far as Pueblo, Colo, before winter set in, and the family spent the winter in a dugout. This is where Maxine's grandmother was born. She was the first white child bom in Colorado. Later, the family was called to settle the Northern Arizona area. Maxine grew up in Northern Arizona. She taught school there for 12 years. In 1945, she moved to Salt Lake City where she met her husbancf, Raymond Dean. He worked as a building contractor, and Maxine taught elementary school. He died in 2003. They had three children. And her daughter, Marcia, who lives in the Washington, D.C. area, is a children's librarian. She has 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She says all of her grandchildren have been honor students. "They're all outstanding," she says. "Sometimes I can't believe they came from me." In 2004, Maxine Dean moved to Ephraim. She lives at the Golden Skyline Assisted Li ving Center. Maxine said she enjoys reading, and she has many books around her room. She said she likes classical music, and she played the piano in her younger days. From Lindbergh's flight to the moon landing and beyond, Maxine has seen many marvelous things in her life and shared them with younger generations.
