Show i-5—-=-— s- f .->, W.lll, *# Sanpete Messenger/Gunnlson Valley Edition Wednesday, October 25, 2006 Pumpkins — Bulldogs (Continued from S8) tlie board, 8-6, in the third quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run. "That was a nice, sustained drive that really got things started for us," said coach Rhett Jackson. "It was important for us to get on the board." The Gunnison defense held the Rams scoreless in the third and for the rest of the game, giving the offense the opportunity to take the lead. It was Ashton who seized that opportunity. In the fourth quarter, Ashton broke touchdown runs of 40 and 45 yards to give Gunnison the goahead and insurance scores. "We ran this play where almost our whole line goes through one hole," said Ashton of his first dash. "With blocking like that all I have to do is make a few moves and outrun the other team." Ashton did that twice, breaking the game open for the Bulldogs. "The whole team came out with a different intensity after halftime," Ashton said. "You couldjell that nobody wanted to lose. We just never gave up." Jackson said he knew if the team could keep the game close in the first half, they would have a chance to pick up a win. "We came out a little bit flat, but we kept it close," he said. "We never created any first-half momentum. But the thing about big plays is they create momentum, so we started to really roll in the second half." The win was the third this year for Gunnison and advances the Bulldogs to play North Summit Saturday on the road in the quarterfinals. The game is set for 2 p.m. "We played North Summit really well the first time we played them," Ashton said. "If we can just make a few less mistakes there is no reason we can't beat them." Diego, whose only loss has been to third ranked Judge, is not ranked by the Deseret News. Bear River is ranked fourth by the Salt Lake Tribune, which has Juan Diego in the second spot. In the only previous meeting between North Sanpete and Bear River, the Bears won 31-13 in the second round of the 1999 playoffs. In the other Region 8 game played Thursday night, Juan Diego beat Delta, 6-0 to claim the region crown. The 9-1 Soaring Eagle will host 3-6 Grantsville in the playoffs while Delta has a tough draw hosting 7-3 Tooele. In Region 9 action, Hurricane downed Pine View 31-21 while Cedar City, 7-2, claimed the Region title. Region 10 champ and topranked Park City got a tough draw in its quest to claim its first-ever state football crown. The Miners, the only undefeated 3A squad at 10-0, will host the fourth seed from Region 9, Snow Canyon at 7-2. Hawks (Continued from A8) 3A playoffs. KickofT is set for 7 p.m. on Friday. Bear River is 6-4 overall, and swept through Region 11 play with 5-0, including a 21-14 win over defending 3Achamp Logan last Friday. The Bears made a surprising appearance at the second spot in their first showing of the year in this week's Deseret Morning News poll. The Bears' only loss to a 3A opponent this year was a 17-6 loss to Juan Diego in September. Juan ups to haul more loads. "I'd work the year around if it were possible," shesavs. Rick Wheeler Manti (Continued from A8) A shoestring tackle stopped Thomson from returning the interception for a touchdown, but gave Manti great field position on the Beaver six-yard iine. Three plays later Chase Pili powered it in from the one and Manti narrowed Beaver's lead to 22-6. Beaver continued to move the ball at will, using three big plays to score on a 38 yard pass to Sean Foster with less than a minute left in the first half to lake a 29-6 halftime lead. - Manti seemed to draw some strength from a special teams effort that saw Eli Menet recover a mishandled kick. Double-digit yardage runs by Pili, Steven Olson, Griffin Aste, and Steven Fowles had Manti knocking on the door again. Pili capped off the 73 yard drive with a three yard plunge to make the score 29-14 for Beaver. An on-side kick attempt was fielded by Beaver and returned to the Manti 27. Jeff Oldroyd followed his blockers into the end zone from the 18 for the final touchdown of the game. Beaver had Manti's number and racked up 261 yards on 44 carries and completed 5-of-11 passes for 100 yards for 361 total offensive yards. Manti never got on track, only managing 148 yards on 45 carries. Griffin Aste was sacked and under continual pressure and kept the Templars from completing any of the four passes that were thrown. Pili, still suffering from a hamstring injury, led the Templars with 38 yards on eight carries. Aste had 29 yards on nine runs in spite of being sacked several times. Thomson had 13 runs for 23 yards, Olson had 22 yards on six runs, Fowles ran twice for 17 yards, and Ned Demill carried once for four yards. For the first time in eight years the Templars will not be playing in a semi-final game. While some might consider the 2006 season a disappointment, assistant coach Mark Hugentobler has said that the only losers are the ones who quit. And if that's the case, the 2006 Templars are not losers and this season will be remembered a character builder that served as a classroom for the 2007 team, a team that should have Manti right back in contention for the championship.
