Title (Continued from A1) zlies’ field-goal attempt. The play would have ended there, but when two Snow players tried to retrieve the still moving ball, all they succeeded in doing was to knock it into the end zone. Since they had touched the ball, it remained in play and was recovered by Butler, resulting in a touchdown. Then on Snow’s try, Regan Buck bobbled a Jon Eastman pass, and the ball was intercepted by Butler. The change in possession was sudden death for Snow. Yet even if technically Butler was the one that pulled the proverbial trigger, there were plenty of other, mostly unwilling, accomplices. Indeed, the game was Snow’s to lose in many respects; just a few “if-onlys,” and a Snow national championship would be alive and well today. If only those two Snow players hadn’t touched the ball after the second-overtime blocked field goal. If only Buck hadn’t bobbled that final pass. If only Eastman hadn’t thrown another interception that was immediately returned for a Butler touchdown in the second quarter. If only Snow hadn’t committed so many penalties, also during the second quarter. Five of Snow’s nine penalties were committed in the second quarter (remember, that was Butler’s big showing). If only Joe Phillips hadn’t missed that field-goal kick—yet again in the second quarter— the one that hit the goalpost and then dropped straight down, no good. If only Snow’s offensive line could have found a way to give Eastman more time to make plays happen. Quite often, Eastman was scrambling to evade Butler defenders who couldn’t be contained. To his credit, he did well with the pressure he found himself under. If this sounds hard on Snow, it shouldn’t. The strength of the Snow team is underscored when one sees that Butler only did so well because of Snow’s own missteps. But the biggest if-only wasn’t Snow’s fault at all: if only those two pass receptions in or near the end zone hadn’t been called out of bounds. Twice, Snow players caught passes that would have resulted in touchdowns, had not the officials ruled them out of bounds and called them back. One of those calls might have been legitimate. The other one definitely wasn’t. Early in the second quarter, Kyle Hatch caught a third-down 24-yard pass at the 1 yardline, but was called out of bounds. The resulting fourth-down field-goal attempt was the one missed by Phillips. When asked if he had been in bounds or not, Hatch said, “I don’t know, I was just trying to catch the ball.” The other call came with about six minutes remaining in the game, when Sam Thomas caught a 4-yard pass in the end zone, which was again called out of bounds. Yet photos of the play later showed Thomas was clearly in bounds. Snow still scored later during that same drive, but only after eating up another minute-and-a-half of game clock. Regulation play ended with Snow on second down at the Butler 38 yardline. So, though it’s admittedly conjecture, that extra minute-and-a-half might have allowed Snow a chance at another score that would have won the game.
