The biggest obstacle to getting the new program up-andrunning, according to the district, is money. At the South Sanpete School Board meeting last week, Assistant Superintendent Brenan Jackson presented three scenarios and associated costs for establishing soccer at Gunnison and Manti high schools. The options, as presented by Jackson are: (1) Joining a region with Sevier County schools, (2) Joining a 3A region or (3) Joining a 1A/2A region. The numbers were comprehensive and included costs for officials, uniforms, equipment (such as practice and game balls, and paint to mark the field) and the most significant cost, travel. Jackson’s figures also included one-time costs associated with starting up soccer programs. Because of those, costs will be higher the first year than in subsequent years. He said that he got multiple bids and included the lowest costs in his proposals. He said there were ways to trim some of the fat, but the largest cost—transportation—was fixed and probably would only increase. Jackson based his figures on this year’s transportation costs of $2.26 per mile for both boys’ and To establish soccer in both high schools in South Sanpete School District District cost for officials at $2,560 per school ............................................. $5,120 Yearly transportation costs for Manti High School @ 2.26 .......................... $4972 Yearly transportation costs for Gunnison High School @ $2.26 .................. $4356 District cost for head coaches at $1,560 per school .................................... $3,120 District cost for asst. coaches at $780 per school ........................................ $1,560 District total for 240 uniforms (home and away required) at $25.50 .......... $6,120 Practice balls (Diadora) 30 per school @ $15 each ........................................ $900 Game balls (Diadora) 16 per school @ $23 each ........................................... $736 District total for goals and nets (low bid) $1,329 per school ...................... $2,658 District total for corner flags (set of four) at $69 per school .......................... $138 District total for field paint (8-5 gallons buckets) $30 each ........................... $480 Field prep and maintenance (4 hrs a week for 16 weeks @ $8 per hour) ......... $2,048 SCHOOL DISTRICT TOTAL........$32,208 girls’ teams from both high schools, which put total transportation costs near $10,000 per year. He noted in an interview, however, that gas prices have gone up since he put together his figures, and conservative estimates for next year’s travel costs could be as high as $2.60-$2.80 per mile. According to Jackson’s numbers, to start both a boys’ and girls’ program at both high schools and to join a region with Sevier would cost $32,208. To join a 1A/2A region would cost $37,613. Subsequent yearly costs would range from $21,393$27,821. Sports programs in south Sanpete schools are already struggling, Jackson says, and often schools and the district have to steal from Peter to pay Paul. He says ticket sales from a few sports— namely boys’ football and basketball—subsidize the remainder of programs. Currently, Manti has to raise an additional $22,000 a year for high school sports. He noted that soccer would be one more sport that would not generate any revenue. The board discussed several options for funding the programs, including levying a recreation tax, which ended up as the only viable solution, according to Jackson. Some on the board noted, however, that South Sanpete is already a highly taxed district, and even though it is one of the few districts that doesn’t have a recreation tax, a proposal to raise taxes might not go over well. The district is considering a random sampling of district residents either by mail or at spring parent-teacher conferences to see if there is enough support to justify a new tax. But Jackson said there were also other considerations. He told the board that Millard High School leaped before they looked, adopted soccer and asked to join a 3A region. The region accepted the request and adjusted its schedules to accommodate the new school. However, says Jackson, the school was unable to field a team and had to cancel their season, which left 3A teams scrambling to fill empty slots in their schedules. Jackson reported that proponents of high school soccer are adamant that there is enough interest. But Jackson says he wants to be sure that the schools can maintain a viable program and field competitive teams year-after-year. Board members indicated that they supported getting soccer into the schools but that establishing viable programs would take time. They set a target to get the programs going in the 20072008 school year. Ultimately, the board’s response to soccer supporters was to be patient while the district creates a viable, lasting and beneficial program for students. “Our board is very interested in soccer,” said Jackson, “and we’re looking at many options.” He also added that sanctioned soccer in south Sanpete is “not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when.’” INDOOR FLEA MARKET & FURNITURE SALE Spring City Old Elementary School 100 E.
