public speaker Beth Hewes chairperson of Snow’s communciations department presided over this unique event which was attended by a couple hundred students What made the event unique was that students in each of the department’s seven public speaking classes elected a classmate to represent them at the contest Fresia Alder originally from Santiago Chile was the first to speak and was the competition’s winner Her subject was domestic violence but with an unusual twist In her presentations she argued against the misconception that men were the sole perpetrators of domestic She cited evidence showing that men are victims of only physical but verbal and emotional as well — just as often as women violence domestic violence — not are Ms Alder is a criminal justice major which gave her speech an authentic air of knowledge and competence Cole Montegue spoke about poaching and the adverse effect it can have on legitimate hunting He placed attention on unreported poaching cases in Utah saying that only percent of poaching cases are ever reported Instead most poaching is discovered through finding the remains of illicitly bagged deer and elk Montegue bemoaned the fact that most of these animals were taken for prized antler racks He detailed some of the efforts of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to reduce poaching and said that the best thing private citizens could do to stop poaching was to report it whenever they become aware of it Matt Goble an agriculture from Nephi debunked certain myths that claim grazing major livestock ruin rangeland and destroy the environment He that instead of recommended listening to such propaganda people should consider the facts instead He said that because only two percent of the US population it is is engaged in agriculture important for others to know the facts so that informed policies can be instituted He gave evidence that responsible grazing is good for the environment and has beneficial effects on grasslands He stated that grazing “was a fundamental biological process” Other contestants at the competition included Brooke Birk a secondary education major from Manti who spoke about the benefits of tanning Jenn Edelman a business major from Brigham City who spoke about the merits of sexual abstinence before marriage Tyler Rydalch of Stockton who warned about the dangers of diets and Sean
