Sanpete roads being classified any unlisted roads will have no access By C R Commissioners Truitt Staff writer MANTI — Three representatives from the BLM met with commissioners and USU extension agent Gary Anderson at the Dec 7 county commission meeting to ask for their cooperation in reviewing the classification of roads and trails for public access within the county BLM travel plan team leader Stan Adams said his team has been working to classify route use (roads and trails) for the last two years Their efforts will ultimately determine whether routes on BLM land will be marked for all vehicles drive vehicles ATVs motorcycles hiking or no public access Adams said the BLM wants to classify every route and they will accept letters of suggestion from the public He said it is important to classify all routes The rule the government once operated under was that if the route wasn’t listed it allowed free access But now if the route isn’t listed die public will have no access Inventory sources for routes Adams said come from state and county government maps aerial photos special interest groups rangers who check routes on ATV s and letters or maps from the public He said his team would take letters or drawings at face value for now and verify them later In the last two years the team has had some 22 million acres to survey in four counties Missionary Discounts Airport been marked and placed on maps yet The BLM representatives said they wanted to cooperate with the commission and Anderson in meetings to review each route in the county He said there are about 200 known routes in Sanpete Anderson said he has lived in the county all of his life but hasn’t been on many of the routes The voiced similar commissioners opinions as Anderson and asked if they could use the county’s access committee which has been studying public use for years Many of the committee members have firsthand knowledge of the routes within the county Adams said it was doubtful his supervisor would let his team work with anyone else although he said the team could hold public meetings Adams said the commissioners could host a public meeting and invite the access committee but his team’s findings could not be shared with the general public at this time & from A ) Saving that water said lenge Grant Program which pays of the cost (up to $300000) for projects “involving conservation efficiency and water marketing” according to a document prepared by HAL Under the proposed reclamation project the city’s treatment system would be modified to capture wastewater and to provide additional water treatments such as filtration chlorination and traviolet treatment to make sure it is safe The treated water would then be available for either for irrigation of big water consumers such as the cemetery and the sports Anderson “would add considerable life to our current wastewater treatment system” “Also” he added “it would reduce the need to purchase additional water rights or develop new sources of water” He issued a caveat however that the city is only taking a preliminary look at the system and that a final decision on the project will not be made immediately “We’re not going forward until we do a better analysis” he said and continued “The council’s action simply allows HAL to provide that analysis as part of securing the contract with the city” Another factor determining whether or not the city will pursue the project is the amount of funding it receives from the grant pro“If the grant is $200000 or more then the city will seriously consider it” Anderson said “if it is less than that then no way” Contact Information fax suzanne sanpetemessenger com publisher at: spoils to: sportssanpetemessengercom school items to: schoolsanpetemessengercom
