Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black Wednesday, November 9, 2005 A9 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition History (Continued from A5) Virginia said. “I waited for two years before I set a date because I had a good job, and I was sending money home to my parents in Twin Falls, Idaho. My dad was ill, and I felt like I needed to help them out.” An interesting note is that while working at LDS Hospital, Virginia cared for prominent patients such as David O. McKay’s wife; Melvin J. Ballard, then mayor of Salt Lake City; and James E. Talmage, LDS church patriarch. In 1933, Glen and his new bride settled in Ephraim and started operating a farm, tending to tur- keys, cattle and sheep. Yet the day after they moved into their home, Virginia was called into nursing service. “A doctor called me and said, ‘Come quick.’ There was a lady who had [had] a baby and was dying and had infection. So I did go to see what I could do, but the lady did die; there was no penicillin. After that I was on the go all of the time.” She didn’t accept money for her services but was always there for whomever needed her. The Nielsons don’t know who put the book up for sale on eBay. The only information related to the sale was that a 97-year old woman had her son try to sell it through a bookstore in the East. The Nielsons don’t know if the woman had received the book from Elder Nielson personally, but the book is in remarkable condition, and amazingly, the card identifying the missionary as Glen J. Nielson is almost like new. It seems to the Nielson family that it is more than coincidence that the 1920 Book of Mormon came back to Ephraim. It all started with a call from Texas from a man who didn’t know the book belonged to Matt Nielson’s relative. Glen Virginia Nielson and her nephew Matt Nielson look over the items found in the Book of Mormon owned by Virginia’s husband and Matt’s uncle, Glen. Nielson passed away 15 years ago. “All he knew was that my name was Nielson and thought that in a small town there might be a chance that we were related,” Matt said. It was a fortunate sequence of events that transpired between call and the purchase of the precious items. “The best thing and most interesting is that this happened in the year when the prophet has asked all of us to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year,” said Matt. “The family is very grateful and excited, but also still in awe about how this all came about.” Sanpete County High School Athlete of the Week Blackhawk Old Town Christmas Festival 650 Equestrian Lane, Salina, UT Sub forNovember Santa12,Fundraiser 2005 Dinner at 6:00 p.m. prepared by The to a Tom Vine All proceeds from both the dinner and the dance go toward helping needy children in our area.
