Things are shaping in such a wav in San Pete that would indicate a boom for our County so far as labor is concerned, at least. Last Friday Mac Doagall, ofSpring-vill- e, was in Mari'i and Ephraim in the interests of the D. & R. G. W. cecuring contracts for ties for said road. The ties are to be delivered in three months along the proposed route through the County. In answer to a question by a Register reporter Mr. Dougall said a contract tor 28miles grade, from Fairview to Manti had beenlettoCrand.il of Springville, and ground was to be broken on the contract the first part of the present week. The grade as far as Fairview will be completed and a small force arc now engaged laying track from Thistle. THE U P. has about 200 men in Oak Creek Canyon Spring City, cutting ties, to be shipped to Millord. Teams commenced hauling this wee; and the S. P V. ,will put on an extractian each day to carry the ties to Nephi. There no are new developments re-garding the extension of the S. P. V. to Manti or further. . The Utah and California is again being talked up, and perhaps, though the chances seem small, that toad will be built through San Pete. There are three railroads surveyed through our County, and out of the tint it is to be hoped we will get. at leist one, befote Chtistmas. , ,. Everybody in San Pete are employed, and there are not enough men to dolbe work. There are eastern lahorei how employed in the county, and the offers were made to those who took thtie con-tracts to bring eastern laborers 1ere to do the chopping, but our local contractors The upper room of the City Hall was rented to the Manti.School Trustee! lor J20.00 per term. t'e; were alio to be jilowed the use of th north room for lio.oo per term should they desire it. Whaidoy iu mean by this? asked the parson as he could hardly believe that he had understood the man's reply. Ti'e 'nun finely got over his firsi scare and said, that inasmuch as a child belongs to the Devil as long as it has not been baptized lie was anxious to have his child emer this world us a child of God and f.r this reason wanted it baptized before it was born, which event might happen at any moment. 1 he good parson was here in a dilemna. She has iht ".Boom" awful bad, and we hereby offer a reward of two tramns and a to anu one who will perscribe an emetic that will purge from' his stomach the trash which has been accumulating there for the past two or three weeks. This disease resembles the La Grippe in that its elbcts aie d ff'erent in different localities; tor instance, in Little Chicago it brought on an enlargement of the noddle, which was pr .nounced by some to be "water on the brain." The effect on Fairview is quite different as it opei-- l ates altogether on her stomach, and she hasn't thought once that she could beat! Hut they sav there is no great loss without some small gain. This will also apply to the "Boom." It's as good as an atlas of the world almost. Why our boys can just sit around the stores and learu about the of Montana, the ranches ol Colorado and Idaho, and the mining camps and bad women of Nevada, whether they can read or not. Dunt you wish you had the If you do, come and get i: right away, as it is eating up all our surplus hay, and we fear it will not stop there. It is al-most as bad as the grasshoppers of Ephraim, only it dues not eat oats before they are th iashed nor hay before it is hay, but it is now looking on like the little boy who has to wait till the second table to eat, anxiou-d- awaiting the time when the hum of the thrasher will be beaid in the land; and it will not have to wait long as the harvest is at hand, and that $1.75 per cw t for oats is a big thing in the eye of the San I'ete farmers, whose binsgenerally look like a bread-pa- n which has been filled with dough, stocked with leaven and allowed to stand in a warm place over night. It has been conceded so many times that it seems like vain reiforation, to. say what our dairy possi.lities are. The Rkcister is glad to learn from men of energy, that there is talk of buy-ing an advantageous site in Ephraim, and erecting a creamery on the lat-est models and most approved plans. There has been a standing reproach in the quality of our dairy stock, but great strides towards improving them have been taken in the past few years, and Ephraim has recent-ly become the possessor of three pure bred short horn bulls. This superior strain of dairy stock is well known, and the importance of the purchase in this connection can be readily recognized. If this story is true, the Columbia Government very probably w II extend the concession loan, enough for the canal to be complet- - ed. ... yi (y |
