Declared legally blind after an industrial accident, Allred had seen only muted grays for a quarter of a century. Allred was hit directly in the face by a mixture of acid and sand while working at the Union Carbide Metals Division uranium ore processing plant. His eyes were washed several times and examined by a company doctor. Allred went home only to return several hours later in terrible pain. He was rushed by air toan eye specialist, but by the time he arrived, he could no longer distinguish light from dark. Sand induced scratches per- mitted acid to enter the cornea and blood vessels grew into the normally clear surface of the cornea. Three months after the accident, Allred was declared legally blind. Unwilling to retire, he returned to his post assisting the foreman in the acid preparation division. In 1955 he was promoted to shift foreman, the first hourly worker at Uravan ever to reach the salaried ranks without a college education. In 1977 he was proto process engineer in moted charge of tackling special technical problems. Allred never lost hope that maybe one day his eyes could be repaired and eventually his patience was rewarded. In August of 1980 he underwent a cornea graft, an operation of considerable risk, on his right eye. hours after the Twenty-fo- ur operation, Allred was able to see colors again. Encouraged by his success, Allred underwent a second transplant on his left eye in May of 1981. Hie stitches were removed in November and Allred has been revelling in his vision ever since. He must still wear corrective eye glasses, but after being blind all those years, he says, Why, Im on a high all the time. Kitchen cutting boards are a potential source of harmful bacteria. Many home economists recommend two different cutting boards, one for use with food that will not be cooked and another for use in cutting raw chicken, fish and meat. Household bleach solution can help sanitize cutting boards. |
