S., as amended by section 14 of the act of June 28, 1934, (48 Stat., 1274 ; 43 U. S. C. 1171), and pursuant to the application of James Dewitt Frampton, 711 W. Magnolia Avenue, Inglewood 1, California, Serial No. U 012194, there will be offered to the highest bidder, but at not less than $5.40 per acre, at a public sale to be held at 10:00 oclock a.m., on the sixteenth day of May next, at giveh to thin the blood. In a study at the Ford hospital in Detroit, doctors found that the death rate among patients who g went on taking drugs d after a heart attack was only one-hato of what it was among those who were taken off the drug. The dosage of the .drug, however, must be carefully can regulated because cause the blood to lose its clotting power entirely and even the slightest cut may lead to death. The doctor has to make frequent tests to be sure that the blood still has a safe margin of clotting power. The tests determine the exact clotting time of a patients blood, which varies with each individual. Once this time is known, the doctor can prescribe the correct dosage of anti-clottin- one-thir- lf anti-clotti- over-dosa- drugs. Possibly the simplest, fastest, and safest chemanti-clottin- g ical used in such tests is a substance called Simplastin. At one time, the tests could be made only in hospitals with elaborate equipment. Simplastin, however, requires only a small centrifuge which most doctors have. As a retreatment1 may sult, be carried out safely in rural areas and small towns as well as large cities. Known as a diagnostic, Simplls-ti- n was developed by scientists at anti-clotti- the Warner-Chilco- tt Research Laboratories, which is celebrating its centennial this year. Simplastin is just one of a variety of subrestances the Warner-Chilco- tt searchers have developed to help the doctor make accurate tests in the treatment of many different conditions and emergencies. Many lives, for example, have been saved by Evans Blue, a diagnostic perfected in the Warner-Chilco- tt Laboratories. With Evans Blue, a doctor can accurately determine the blood volume of a person who has been wounded in battle, injured in an accident, or. is undergoing surgery. Before the development of the Evans Blue test, a person could j bleed to death or die from shock due to the loss of blood. Now, a doctor can tell just how much J blood is needed by transfusion to! maintain life. diag-- j Another Warner-Chilco- tt nostic, Inulin, that measures ex-- j cess water in body tissues is used to diagnose certain kidney and heart ailments. Recently it was! employed in a unique experiment conducted in the Sahara desert by a team of United States scientists. These researchers used Inulin to determine how camels store water, in the hope of discovering methods whereby humans can live com-- ! I fortably in desert areas. The tests made with Simplastin, Evans Blue, and Inulin are just a! few examples of the great prog- -' ress that this branch of medical' science has made. Although the . first diagnostic was discovered only forty years ago, the number! of tests is now so great that their definitions alone occupy forty-seve- ; n pages in a medical diction- ary. And there are accurate tests for almost every disease, ranging from anemia to syphilis. j |
