sculptor Family members friends and art patrons numbering 400 attended the opening exhibit and reception for the works of the late Avard T Fairbanks at the Salt Lake Art Center Mr Fairbanks noted Utah sculptor died Jan 1 at age 89 His widow Beatrice Maude Fairbanks sons and a daughter were present Son Jonathan Fairbanks curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture Boston Museum of Fine Arts addressed the audience in the auditorium in the first of three in a lecture series His subject was “Sculpture and Artistic Vision in 19th and 20th Century ‘ America” and his father’s place in it He ended his lecture with a tribute to his father Other children present were Dr Eugene Fairbanks Hazel Parkinson Saint-Thom- Bellingham and Elliott and Dawn Fairbanks Bountiful Other Fairbanks children are i daughter Marie Hansen Simi Valley Calif sons Justin an art teacher in Thatcher Ariz Virgil Rochester Minn and David Fairbanks Washington DC Family members attended a private viewing of the video "Avard T Fairbanks — Eight Decades” (seven as a sculptor) before the opening of the exhibit and reception Kevin Hanson cinematographer directed and edited the film The show was sponsored by Retrospective Inc a newly formed nonprofit fine arts organization Marcia Price a founder explained that the purpose of the group is to present exhibitions and retrospective shows of Utah artists Other founding members are Lila Abersold Ruth Lubbers and Ernest Muth Attending with the founders were John Price Bruce Lubbers and Eleanor Muth Two other lectures in the series at the center are scheduled Jan 30 and Feb 20 at 7 pm The Fairbanks exhibit is open to the public through March 6 Donations are accepted Others family members present were Mr Fairbanks' brother John B and wife June Fairbanks
