Show CHOLERA IN VIENNA. Asiatic cholera has made its appearance appear-ance in the capital of Austria and an epidemic is feared. Only a day or two ago an outbreak of the scourge in Berlin Ber-lin was noted, and the situation ..may well be considered grave. The people of both Germany and Austria are in no condition to withstand such a disease. Xot long ago Director Koehrig of the municipal analytical bureau of Leipzig issued a statement in which he asserted that samples he examined of prepared meats contained "the most loathsome offal," and that chalk, plaster, alum, soda, sawdust and plain common clay are in great demand and fetch unprecedented unprece-dented piices because they are extensively exten-sively used for purposes of adulteration. The food situation is no better in Austria, Aus-tria, especially at Yienna, where horses for slaughtering purposes are worth from $1000 to $1500 each, and the practice prac-tice of stealing them has gone to such an extent that many firms have been driven out of business. Persons living on the kinds of food now used in the cities of the central powers are certain to die when attacked by cholera. In this country the Spanish influenza is making rapid headway, there being a total of about 100,000 cases up to date. The government is doing everything every-thing within its power to check the ravages rav-ages of the new disease, but is meeting with poor success. The proportion of pneumonia eases is one to about thirteen thir-teen of influenza, which is not considered consid-ered large by the authorities, although we may be sure there will be hundreds of deaths in the army corps from this cause in the course of the next few-weeks few-weeks unless the situation improves. So far there have been a number of Utah victims, but none of them have died within the confines of the state. We hope to be able to chronicle an improvement im-provement very soon. |
