AS'hen he had money he did not know hovr to keep it. When he had a good claim he did nut stick to it. When friends tried to help him he fren, uently refused their offers with a snarl. He imagined offenses where nono were intended. Ho complained of plots against his life in a community where nearly everybody uckuowledged obligation to 111111. He was irritated by the superior popu-larity aud prosperity of Kulter, by the fact that to Sutter the main credit of the gold discovery was given by many news-papers and influential citizens, and that, partly under the influence of that idea, a pension of $250 a month was fiiven to Sut-ter in 1H70, while tlie true discoverer re-ceived nothing. After tho publication of Marshall's biography in 1870, the legisla-ture perceived the injtisticeof its exclusive favor to Sutter, and in the course of six years it gave tli, fkxi as pension to Marshall, but left him to spend tlie last eight years of his life in poverty and privation, lu 1SS5, nt the age of 73, he died while alono in a solitary cubiu which he occupied in company with another aged and indigent pioneer miner. Dyspepsia is one of the most common causes of baldness. Nature is a great economizer, aud when tlie nutrient ele-ments furnished by the blood are tnsuf-flriv-to properly support tlie whole body, she cuts olf the supply to parts the least vitui.iike the hair and nails, that the heart, lungs and other vital organs niuy lie the better nourished. In cases of severe fevers, this economy is particularly noticeable. A single hair is a sort of history of the physi-cal condition of an individual during the time it has been growing, if one could read closely enough. Take a hair from tlie beard or from the bead and scrutinize it, and you will see that it shows some at-tenuated places, indicating that at some period of ita growth the blood supply woa iiein-ieii- uu' "iinijrR uuAici.y, ur uuuur feeding. " " The hair falls out when the strength of its roots is insufficient to sustain its weight any longer, and a new hair will take its place unless the root i.t diseased. For this reason each person has a certain definite length of hair. When the hair begins to split or fall out, massage to the scalp is excellent. I'lace the tip of the flngen firmly upon the scalp and then vibrato or move the scalp while holding the pressure steadily. This will stimulate the blood vessels underneath and bring about better nourishment of tho hair. A brush of un-evenly tufted br'stles ia also excellent to use upon the scalp, not the hair. Serpents of all sorts come to tlie Smithsonian in two shapes. The small-er ones are usually in alcohol, while the big fellows arc apt to be simply dried and poisoned by soaking in an arsenical solu-tion. In tho preparation of a specimen very sharp and delicate scissors are em-ployed, with forceps to supplement them, the flesh being carefully removed as fur as it is practicable with these instruments. Then recourse must be had to scraping of tlie bones until they are perfectly clean. Sometimes tlie skeleton is soaked iu an acid preparation for tlie purpose, but this destroys tlie ligaments, and it is not easy to put nil the parts together again rightly. In the preparation of delicate skeletons the great thing is patience. Washington Letter. NOTICE.
