In 1965 Southern Utah State College severed all previous ties to Utah State University and became bacthe states sixth four-yea- r, institucalaureate degree granting tion. Over the years, nothing has come easily to SUSC. From the very first Southern Utah State has had to struggle. Even the site of the college was determined only after bitter competition among several southern Utah communities. Once Cedar City was chosen as the site (and at that time Cedar e village City was only a with about 300 men and boys mostly employed in fanning and ranching), the struggle only increased in intensity. Late in December of 1897, the Utah State Attorney General sent word that unless a state-owne- d building was completed in time for school to start the following September, Cedar City would lose the right to be the home of the new institution. In an almost unbelievable logging operation, lumber was hauled from the mountains (up to 10,000 feet in elevation) east of Cedar City. A local historian wrote of the two-stor- dead-of-wint- er venture: It was the dead of winter, and there were no building materials left in town. They had no money, and. ..they were miles from the railway terminal in Milford. The only available project they could begin at once was to send volunmiles into the teers thirty-fiv- e mountains to get out the lumber that had been left...when the snow began to fall. Two parties of men left Cedar City..., one on January 5, 1898, to break trail and load the lumber. Caught in a heavy snow storm, the men barely escaped with their the most urgent pleading...would they even consent lives...Only to go back. Since 1953, SUSC has grown in enrollment from 360 students to just under 2,000 students. Enrollment predictions for the fall of 1976 indicate a student body which will Creditors will present claims with vouchers to the undersigned at 2805 So. Not all have carried my byline. The column was launched by Dr. W.W. Bauer in November 1965. When he passed away, I took over, beginning with the columns in March 1968. EARLY IN his career, W.W. Bauer, M.D. served as a public health officer. Then he joined the staff of the American Medical Association and, as Director of Health Education and Editor of the AMA magazine Todays Health, extended his influence to national and international levels. It was during his AMA years that he became one of the most skilled medical writers and broadcasters. After he retired from AMA he began this column. THINKING BACK to Dr. Bauers days and my early years with this column reminds me that these have helped to make nutrition a more politically tium-- all and more subject. This is as it should be and this column is proud of the part it has played since 1965 in arousing and sustaining public interest. Good nutrition can be a potent force for protecting your health. It should not be taken for granted. APROPOS of this. Dr. Bauer, in his first column for the week of November 8, 1965, titled his copy, "The Kitchen Is a Health Center. public-health-orient- 4-- ed Some excerpts: New knowledge is being developed all the time by thousands of nutritional and clinical research workers, and reported in more journals than the homemaker could possibly read. . . .
