Home improvement inself-car- opportunities for mentally retarded individuals to live fulfilling lives. There are many examples of such activity across the state. In Ogden, a DFS social worker recently discovered a nine-yeold mentally retarded boy who had been placed in a rest home primarily for mentally retarded adults. The boy was promptly moved to a foster home where the stimulation afforded by the family atmosphere has caused him to begin to speak, to not be so frustrated, and to acept discipline like any child. In Provo, a mentally retarded young man who was already employed, expresed the desire to obtain more schooling. He consequently began studying basic reading and writing skills three nights a week in the community school program. A Provo mother now feels that she can better work and play with her little girl who is menar tally retarded since she enrolled her in the sensorymotor program at the Utah State Training School. Previously she had felt bewildered and inadequate. These incidents illustrate that a mentally retarded person like any person, has a potential which can be fulfilled. DFS is making it possible for these Utah citizens to realize their potential. All mentally retarded persons and their families are eligible. The specialized social service worker or workers asigned to help the retarded in Utah communities are responsible to help the retarded and their family members to achieve goals which will be helpful to the situation. By means of a statewide network of offices, DFS provides training, independent living in varied residential arrangements and information and referral. During the time period 1974, 513 mentally retarded individuals and their families received services from DFS. During October-Decembof the same year, 677 people were asisted, and during 1975, 949 persons and their families were serviced. DFS is continually expanding services to meet consumer demands. Paul S. Rose, Executixe Director of the Department of Social Services, reported that recently progress has been made in understanding the needs of the mentally retarded and in developing resources responsive to these needs. However, further expansion of services requires that the team effort goes beyond the provider, the consumer and the family. The interest and cooperation of every Utah citizen is essential for Utah to become a conductive environment for the development of its mentally retarded citizens. The service information may be obtained by calling local Division of Family Services offices, or Katherine Mason, Mental Retardation Coordinator, at June-Septemb- er cr Janu-ary-Mar- ch 328-503- 1.
