There semes to have been little research on how to apply this new knowledge of trace elements. One doctor found that stresses such as operations; trauma and burns produce an elevation of zinc in a patients blood. This suggests that an analysis of zinc concentrations in blood could be one method of monitoring the recovery of a critically injured patient The doctors conclude that much needs to be learned about the effects of trace elements on human physiology and the benefits that can be derived from them. The gap between research results, clinical application and placing of this knowledge in the hands of doctors should be closed., Computers Fight Pollution San Francisco Bay Area scientists are running a new research project that may give that region one of the worlds most sophisticated tools for en- multi-laborato- ry vironmentally sound land-us- e planning. The project is the development of a powerful computer capable of predicting how a major source of pollution in one part of the Bay Area will affect air quality in any other part. Undertaken jointly by the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and the Bay Area Pollution Control District each contributes the special resources necessary for the multi-facete- d project that is supported by a National Science Foundation grant of $657,000 and expected to last two years. It is hoped that the computer program will be able to predict the air quality implications of land uses ranging from building a new industrial complex to shutting down specific freeways during an extreme emergency smog alert. It will also be designed to predict how expanding population and commercial development will affect air quality in an inland air basin, such as the Livermore Valley. Other scientists have discovered in outer space, deuterium, also called heavy hydrogen, adding new knowledge of the birth of the universe. The scientists used the 36 millimeter wave telescope at Kitt Peak, Ariz. For more than a decade scientists have sought, unsuccessfully, the detect its presence in interstellar space. This is because deuterium is of special interest in understanding the workings of the universe. Hydrogen is the main constituent of the universe. Deuterium also is the first and simplest product of nuclear reactions such as those occurring in stars, and those believed to have occurred in the earlv evolution of the universe. The final report will show data for 10 major kinds of business groups for all counties and incorporated cities of 2500 inhabitants or more in the state.
