Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1971 Employment Security Officer: Fraud Carries Severe Penalties Tech Machine Shop Adds New Equipment Willful misrepresentation made to obtain unearned unemployment benefits is fraud and when detected carries a very severe penalty, according to the Employment Security Office. Some of. this punishment is administered by the courts, but the Department of Employment Security can also take punitive measures independent of court action through authority given to it by the law which created the department, said Curtis M. Harding. What about these penalties for fraud? A court can impose a jail sentence up to 60 days. It can also levy a fine of $250. Mr. Harding pointed out that between January and August of 1971 the Department of Employment Security referred 61 case? to county attorneys for fraud prosecution. As a result, individuals charged with fraud were either convicted or pleaded guilty in 60 of the 61 cases. Fines ranged from $25 to $150. Some individuals served jail sentences, others were placed on probation pending payment of the fines, and repayment to the Department of Unemployment Benefits obtained by fraud. What can Employment Security do, in addition to seeking the court action? It can disqualify a chiseler for one full year. It can continue the disqualification beyond a year, or until all unemployment benefits gotten by misrepresentation have been repaid to the fund which is maintained for legitimate claimants. The Department of Employment Security has a special policing unit staffed by professionals whose full time is spent in hunting down the chiselers and would-b- e chiselers. Backing up this activity is an educational program based on a well founded conviction that most people want to do the right thing and will do it if told how and why. By means of printed material radio and television, the general public has some knowledge of its stake in Utahs Employment Security Program. But when a worker finds himself without a job, and makes application for unemployment benefits he get? the full treatment. First, he registers for work Then he files his initial claim? or benefits. He is told of his obligations and the condition for continued eligibility. He receive? a pamphlet explainng these same things and finally, each claimant watches a half hour movie that step by step explains the obligations of the claimant and the obligations of Employment Security. Mr. Harding said that while the Departments fraud prevention program will continue to be positive and educational, no ef- ment benefits. BICYCLES WERE BAMEP PUCES IW JEW YORK fly 619 ppoM pi0U. Witnesses Conclude Convention CUSTARD LOW-CALO- RIE Mr. Larry McKee, the presiding, minister for the Salt Lake City congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses, announced that an estimated 2,000 persons gathered at the Spanish Fork High school Sunday afternoon to hear Hayes C. Hoskins, District Supervisor for Jehovahs Witnesses, talk on the subject, Can You Live Forever? Will You? This feature 'alk was the climactic hightlight of the three day circuit convention of Jehovahs Witnesses. Mr. Hoskins pointed out that all of Mans hopes and pleasures certainly depend upon life. He noted that during our present lifetime man enjoys fine in many areas of endeavor, but mans life span is really too short to fully enjoy the fruits of his labors. Is there a solution to this problem? Mr. Hoskins noted, The Bible shows 'hat man can live forever in peace and happiness on the earth but that does not mean he will choose to do so. Mr. Hoskins further pointed out the fact that we, as living, intelligent human beings, cannot just agree that the Bible promise of life everlasting is true and sound good, and then sit back in our easy chair and do nothing. He noted, This is where action is required and is, in fact, a accom-olishmen- ts necessity. In conclusion, Mr. Hoskins noted that, One of mankinds greatest needs today is to get better acquainted with God. That man has the grand prospect of life everlasting but this is only possible through obedience and a better knowledge of God. Freezone is for corns that hurt Absolutely painless.
