The United States lias now achieved a standard of living far beyond the dreams of most of mankind through history. This achievement has been possible, to a large extent, by the innovative use of energy to power machines. Newspapers must use their communicative powers to define the problem, and then seek constructive solutions, void of emotional charges and scare tactics. Newspapers have a far heavier responsibility tliat before the national convention of the American Vocational Association in Portland, Oregon. Negating the three R Syndrome in education, President Nelson suggests that educators take one more step in the alphabet to the three three Ss service, success and satisfaction as a direction to offering more valuable education. Vocational technical education does the best job in teaching educational accountability. Referring to the accountability philosopohies of men such as Socrates, Protagoras and Hippocrates, he sees the modern education giant in a crouching position, ready to take a quantum leap into a more well defined direction, that of improved, re- goal oriented educamany re alize in helping resolve environmental problems. sponsible, None is more important than an understanding of the tion. In the first place, they are concerned with the human tragedy resulting from drug abuse. Secondly, public attention has been focused on the abuse of certain legitimate and important medicines. These include amphetamines and barbiturates, some of which are manufactured by leading drug firms. Abuse of these drugs has led to confusion on the whole subject of drugs and prescription drug manufacturers. A spokesman for the drug industry, Joseph Stetler, president of the Pharmaceutical Manufactures Association, discusses this subject in a special article on the drug industry and drug abuse problem. lie emphasizes that, it is necessary to dispel the belief that the manufacturers of legitimate drug products that are subject to abuse dont care. Mr. Stetler gives a lengthy explanation of how major drug firms use every precaution within their power to see that products are not diverted from legitimate channels and legitimate usage. lie observes, typicaly plants have elaborate security systems, often headed by former members of the Federal Hureau of Investigation or other law enforcement agencies. There are strict procedures for handling narcotic containing products or any product subject to control under the Drug Abuse Control Ret of 1905 or earlier legislation. The main point to remember in combatting misuse of legitimate medicines, as Mr. Stetler concludes, is thatour efforts to combat these evils must not create a negative attitude toward legitimate, medical use of medications or toward the professions and the segments of private enterprise most capable of helping perfect our health care system. Competition Gets Results Statistical analyses show that during the past quarter century, food costs have increased less in the U.S. than d have costs. No matter how the ligurcs are analyzed, they lead to the conclusion tliat the U.S. food industry and the mass retail distribution system is doing an impressive job of holding the impact of inflation to ability, we find it simply means having the ability to be accountable; you and I, the institution, and the whole society. It takes ability to be accountable and that implies a measure of courage too, which is probably the very reason weve ignored it for so long. President Nelson pinpoints a fact that nine of ten people lose their jobs, not because of technical incompeetncy, but because of their inability to get along with other people. They simply dont know how to serve in the world of work. They dont understand that even though they may be well trained, they cant possibly be successful until they understand that the whole structure of socal and economic intercourse is based on the provision of worthy service. Mankind may be a bit hazy on his role and profession in life, but the profession of life is service; always has been and always will be. Plenty of people are on the payroll, but not on the service roll. Its not service when a tractor operator hides ten tons shoddy, unsafe wiring job, knowing that the circuit breakers will be popping out by the numbers when a heavy load is fed into the system. His effort is only labor. Its not service when a welder spares the rods on a big shovel blade that he knows will crack when it hits the first big boulder. Not service, only work. He challenges teachers to stress integrity, honesty, dependability, and consideratoin for others, an often neglected part of a training program that puts only a half of a man on a job. Relating the three S system is gratifying, success is sweet, but satisfaction; that which gives one pride in having served and succeeded and which moves one to serve and succeed again. Approximately 4000 delegates attended the AVA convention, a national conference on vocational technical education. Utah Technical College at Salt Lake presently includes success motivation courses in its curriculum and a close working partnership between students and intsructors- to bring about educational and employment accountability in its graduates. - Antelope Transplants Antelope trapping operations near Manila recently yielded over 200 pronghorn for transplanting in three counties of the state with small antelope popu- lation. Big game specialist Homer Stapley said the purpose of the transplant was to expand the population of antelope in Utah to range lands with few pronghorn but capable of supporting more. State Division of Wildlife Resources personnel herded these animals into a huge trap then transported them to the release sites in stock trucks. The Bureau of Land Management cooperated with the Division in earlier studies of the transplant areas. A statistical review of operating results of the nations food chains, prepared by Cornell University researchers, bears out this statement. The review finds 'that the proportion of disposable income spent for food declined from 10.8 per cent in 1908 to 10.5 percent in 1909, compared to 20 percent in 1900. Meanwhile, the mass distributors that work on the narrowest of profit margins the chain ISA SSD GRAPEVINE Salt Lake County officials now have one half of their Metropolitan Hall of Justice free and clear. Bracken Lee in an attempt to gain approval of the new treasurer so that job would become effective January 3, 1972, the date when Mr. Phillips becomes the new city commissioner. Utah Attorney General Vernon Romney has given an opinion stating it is a misdemeanor for public officials to wrongfully exclude members of the public from official meetings. Mr. Romney gave the opinion to John Shields of Logan after he had asked about the legality of the closed door city commission meeting following a controversy involving sending seven Logan city employees to a conference in Hawaii.
