Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1971 100 Millionth Phone For the Bell System Tuberculosis Strikes Navajos, Christmas Seal Assn. Reveals The Utah State Division of Health has done a good job of implementing the tuberculosis program of the 1960s, but action is required to prevent further erosion of the program by public apathy and reduction in federal and state funds. That is the position of the board of directors of the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association of Utah (Christmas Seal Association) in a statement to the Utah State Board of Health this week, according to Lyman F. Smart, president. The board of directors, following a review of the tuberculosis program that began with the TB Hearings in San Juan County last January, extended their commendation to the Division of Health for its leadership and for the many accomplishments noted irom 1964 to 1970. Concern was expressed, however about recent reductions in the tuberculosis program budget and in personnel assigned to the program. As a result of these actions, legislators and others, outpatient clinics, case finding programs, and other services have been reduced to a point that they may no longer meet the peoples needs. The board of directors believes that budget support is needed to implement new technology with imaginative leadership so Utah can retain the initiative which characterized the attack on tuberculosis in the 1960s. This extension of benefit periods begins January 2, and will continue for at least three months from that date. Mr. Harding said that those who have exhausted their benefits in the last 12 months should contract their local employment security office to see if they arc eligible to receive additional benefits. How much of an extension may be received and in what amount depends on the applicant's previous benefit experience. He explained that Public Law passed by the U.S. Conand gress signed by the President in 1970, provides for the present extension and is based on the fact that the seasonally adjusted rate of unemployment of the nation's insured workers for the months of September, October and November exceeded 4.5 per cent, the trigger or turn on point for extended benefits. 91-3- 73 HEARTS a fund originally started by the employees of Utah Oil Refining Co. Employees contribuetd some money each week to provide flowers during the illness of an emoloyee or spouse or in the unfortunate death of an employee or spouse or a blood relative of either. When American Oil purchased Utah Oil in 1961 the fund was continued. For several years now income from the fund has exceeded the cost of the flowers and employees no longer contribute. With the closing of the regional office trustees contacted employees for the permission to close out the fund and in the spirit of Christmas contribute the money to the various organizations. The gifts are made in the name of all regional offices of American Oil.
