Calculating tlia Rainfall. The quantity-o- rain falling at any place is estimated by means of a very implo piece of apparatus know n as a rain gauge. . The most common form of rain gauge consists of a copper funnel, the area of the mouth of which is accu-ratel- y known. The rain collected in this funnel flows into a graduated measure, rhich can very easily be constructed by any one out of a small glass tumbler Kr beaker by pasting on its side a narrow trip of paper, carefully marked off into Inches, half inches, quarters, eighths and ixteenths; or into inches, tenths and twentieths. Supposing that the area of the mouth of the receiving funnel is five times that of the graduated measure, then a depth of fi ve inches In the meas-ure would represent a depth of one inch on an area equal to that of the aperture of the funnel. New York Telegram. Politeness la New York. I heard the other day of a delightful eld country parson who came to New York as the guest of a son who is success-ful in business here. The old gentleman did not go about alone after the first time, because he said it wrung his heart-strings to hear the tales of woe the beg-gar poured into his ears. He could no more wave a beggar aside than you or I could strike a child, and yet he only grieved at the pain their stories gave him, and at his inability' to solace them 11 with money. When the rampant newsboys tugged at his sleeves and yelled, "Here yer evening paper!" be bent over with studied politeness and aid in bis gentle voice: "I've got one already, thank you, Johnny." How the little ruffians stared at that! Julian Ralph in Chatter. i A School for RooMmalda. ' Housemaids should be taught that come of the new scouring soaps, and es-pecially that housewife's treasure, "con-centrated lye," will take off paint or color tains from floors and bath tub ledges. When we get the new high school after Miss Charlotte Pendleton's heart, all girls will be taught the detersive effects of potash and strong soda. Until then you had better caution the housemaid, while putting the indispensable touches of the lye (potash) to either bedstead slats or closet corners, that it must not be dropped en stained boards or painted surfaces, a it will leave bare, or white spots when the stain is "scalded" off by the lye. House painters use potash, in fact, to clean off a surface that they are about to paint anew. Philadelphia Ledgen ' Good for the Ijtwjers. ' Under the extradition treaty with Can- - ada almost any sort of a'criminal charge will extradite, and those planning offenses against the law will be obliged to take the advice of a criminal lawyer. Indeed, the treaty Is a good thing for the lawyers, and they will, no doubt, charge a regular fee for advising a criminal to go to Mex-ico instead of to Canada. Detroit Free Press, A Diplomatic Answer. Editor (after a discussion about the spelling of a word) Well, you wouldn't take my say so, but you had to see whether I was wrong hy looking in the dictionary. Reporter I did not look to see if you were wrong, sir, but to see whether or not I was right. Epoch. A Pointer on Waltilng. "I want to give you a tip on dancing," aaid a flashily dressed man about town yesterday afternoon. "What is it?" he was asked. "Simply this: There is hope for poor dancers.- - As poor dancers are legion thin is Important." "Well, what is tho tip?" . "Nothing more nor less than this: If you are a poor .dancer and of course you are get a heavy partner who is a good dancer." "What good will that do?" ' "All the good in the world. You wre a light man I mean an far as physical weight is concerned. The girl is a good dancer. You go swinging around with her. You are in doubt. You waver just a little bit. Does a break occur? Not at all. The momentum keeps you mov-ing. The heavy girl bless her heart swings you right round at the proper time and place. The result is that spec-tators imagine you are a tip top dancer, whon if it hadn't been for the heavy girl your waltz would have ended disastrous-ly." North American. Uisraeli't Collateral. Disraeli once went to a certain Israel-ite and asked for a loan of several thou-sand pounds. "On what security, Mr. Disraeli?" queried the Hebrew doubtful-ly. "On the security of iny ambition and my genius," said the young politician calmly. "Very extraordinary collateral, Mr. Disraeli," murmured the other, "but call on me if you please, and we will talk it over." The Jew was wise, and Disraeli got the money; and, per-hap-when he saw a young man of merit struggling along he recalled, a he stop-ped to help him, with a thrill of supreme satisfaction that bitter hour of failure when his first speech was drowned by the noise of the opposition, and he closed it abruptly with the passionate prophecy; "The day will come when you shall hear me."
