"The citizen who is contemplating the dissolution of this earthly taberuaclo had 'better bide a wee,' because coffins will soon be within the reach of all," remarked an undertaker to a Times reporter this morning. "A United States right has just been secured by a New York attorney by which a German invention will ge used and the business revo- i lutionized. The rights under the invention have been allowed in England and America, and a company is in process of organization to put the new coffin on the market, and it will probably be completed this week. "The subject matter of the invention, that is, the ingredients of which it is composed, com-posed, have not been made public, but it looks not unlike plaster of Paris and has j various chemical components. It is called l Taehyphag. I "If this material will do what is claimed j for it in a short time coffins and caskets will I be made of it exclusively. The compound has many advantages over wood, metal or any other substance now in use. "The first advantage is hygienic in char-I char-I acter. The body contained in a casket of ! taehyphag decomposes in one-fourth of the time that, it would if buried in a wooden one. This has been proven by perfect test. Two dogs were buried, one in a wooden coffin and the other in taehyphag. In the last the body seemed to dry up, and it became entirely en-tirely dried up before the other body was half decomposed. "Again, taehyphag is susceptible of the I highest degree of ornamentation. Imitation of any kind of wood or metal can be produced pro-duced to perfection, according to the taste of the purchaser. "Its durability has been thoroughly tested. It will carry twelve times the weight of a heavy human body, and the jar of shipment has no effect upon it. It is very strong. "It is non-porous, and coffins and caskets made of this compound can be hermetically sealed, a fact which will strongly recommend recom-mend it to the various boards of health. "Taehyphag means an era of cheap funerals, funer-als, and from a sanitary point of vi w the benefits likely to be derived from its use will be great It will knock out a lot of undertakers, however." |
