Sir Robert Peel, li bo recently stood for Brighton as a nine rule candidate for parliament and wa3 defeated, today called upon the commissioner com-missioner of police, and stated that he had been insulted and threatened by the ladies composing the Primrose League of Brighton. He asked for protection and added if he did not got it he know how to resist and would do so in a manner man-ner that might have fatal consequences. He submitted a number of letters which bo had received from the ladies. In ono he was denounced as an "infernal scoundrel." In anothor he was called a "blooming assassin," and the fair writer of a third threatened to assault him in the streets. The result of the interview is not known, but it is suspected if a Primrose leaguo should undertake to assault Sir Robert, she would not only have to fight the gallant knight himself, but a detective from Scotland yard. The action of Sir Robert has caused a sensation. |
