Show HORSE BALKS ON PROGRAMME Vail Wot Accept Appointment Appoint-ment to Supreme Judgeship, Judge-ship, for Fear of American Ameri-can Party Success. Frost Republican sources comes word that District Judge O. W. Morse will not be appointed ap-pointed through the eftorte of the Smoot machine ma-chine to fill the vacancy that will occur when Chief Justice Barteh , leaves, the Supreme beach on October 1. He will decline any such proposal, and there ia method in his doing so. His friends say there are many reasons why Judge Morse will not be an applicant for ' the place. The toga win fall to some Smootite, or perhaps per-haps a member of the Wells faction may be Induced to accept, so as to attempt a recon--eiliation ia the Republican family. ' One of the atrongeat reasons why Judge Morse will not be appointed is that it would then leave two offices exposed to the enemy. If thinra remain aa they are the Republicans would hold one office, no matter which way it goea. If Judge Morse stays where he ia, he can run for election this fall, and if chosen for the Supreme bench ean resign and thereby there-by allow the Governor to appoint a Smootite. In this ' manner the opportunity for the Americans or Democrats to get one or both .of the offices would be eliminated. Morse's yifgnaUon from the District Judgeship would 1 for aa election for the place this fall. t Besides thia big reason Judge Morse feels iAat he will need considerable time to clean VH hia dockets, and cannot be ready until January 1, at least. . Then again, should he take the vacancy and be defeated, he would then be out of a place and perhaps men of a different political faith ' would be occupying both the Supreme and District Judgeships, - It has been suggested that former Judge J. I. Frick get the appointment, and thereby Sut the quietus on him for the long term. This light be part of the plan. It is not at all improbable that State Chairman Chair-man Spry would like to see former Secretary of State J. T. Hammond receive the place as a harmony balm. |
