Show SERVICES HELD OVER BODY OF GEN. PAYNE .WASHINGTON, Oct. 8. Although an official funeral, the services In St. John's church over the. body of the late Henry C. Payne, Postmaster-General' Postmaster-General' were marked by Impressive simplicity. Official Waahlngton filled 1 the n&ve' of the church and brilliant af wre the' uniforms of the large representative repre-sentative of the army, navy and marine corps, the solemnity of the scene was only enhanced by the sharp contrast of color with the deep mourning of the family and personal friends of the dead cabinet officer. Side by side with Mrs. Payne sat President and Mrs. Roosevelt, Roose-velt, both In deep mourning. After the funeral party had left the church the congregation remained standing until the President and Mrs. Roosevelt entered their carriage. Mrs. Payne and the relatives of the Postmaster-General were driven to the Arlington Ar-lington hotel, where they remained until un-til train time. The body was placed on the special car provided for it and guarded by the postal carriers. The special train carrying me ooay and the funeral party left the Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania station In the afternoon. Secretary Secre-tary Hitchcock, who had expected to go to Milwaukee on the train, was unable un-able to go and telephoned his regrets. Secretary of Agriculture Wilson Is the only cabinet officer who went with the train, but the plans contemplate that Secretaries Shaw and Metcalf will Join the funeral party later. |
